Glad you got the things, Paul - just have fun with them, they are for you since they aren't much. I have contacted Meg Berry, the woman who cut the Himalaya stone on the C & T episode. In one of my bags of pocket mud from Simon, there was an interesting piece of green tourmaline that looks stream tumbled, almost carved - with a weathered texture like beach glass. I'm going to take it down to Meg and see if she can polish it for me since it looks somewhat like the gem carvings she does. It has inclusions and bubbles and will have some pits that she won;t be able to polish off - but it really fascinates me and "speaks" to me. Meg does a lot of work where she pierces the gem so you don't need metal fittings and I'm hoping there is a way that will work with this stone also. I like the idea of keeping the gem as natural as possible.

Hi Andy,

I got Tom's great package this week - so it is like Christmas in June. I'll look for your swap package. I had fun sorting thru the tourmalines and even found a ziplock bag I had totally forgotten about. And somewhere I thinK there is one more plastic box with good tourmalines from my early digging at the Oceanview Mine. I need a weekend to "dig" in my bedroom and dining room. Ellen

hey Paul
That is a nice one. You have got to get a manual focus camera. On reason is so you can take the type of pics you want. The other reason is so you can really show off your great cuts. The last reason is so you can quit telling us about your taped together camera,, tho there was a time I would have loved to have had even a taped together camera. I only have a 2.1 mega pixel on and off camera. no settings just on or off.
Hey wow I just hit that fancy spell check button thingy and found out that if you do that while you are still typing it spell checks the quote too. too cool

Hi Paul, For a small green tourmaline, you sure made that look pretty. It sparkles nicely - even in a pic from a taped up camera. I love the wide variety of greens that the tourmaline that the Himalaya Mine tourmaline comes in - this lime green that I sent you was one of the lightest I have found. I'm just glad the little piece was actually big enough to cut a stone. Congrats! Ellen

Why thanks. It turned out nice. It is almost a changeable color as you look at it sideways it is lime green, but when you look at it from the top, it has a brownish green hue. It is amazing how small a stone that can be faceted. I mean looking at the 1 2 or 3 pt stones. Yikes 1 pt is 1/100 of a carat. The overseas cutters cut down to 1 mm. I can't even see 1 mm. lol I think the smallest stone I have cut was 10 pt and that was a small emerald.. Tourmalline is one of the nicest stones to cut. Thanks for the fun. I received my tresure swap box from Andy Friday, but was so tired from working late that I waited until this morning to look thru it (very uncharacteristic of me). The Saddle Mountain Pet rock piece should polish up really nicely on the one side to should the growth rings - when I can ever find time to go to the club shop. And I didn't have any plant fossils at all - so these were really appreciated. I don't know of any carnelian down in So Cal and we definitely don't have any real streams or rivers. The carnelian you sent was different in color than what Tom sent.

Tom's pet wood was different than any I've seen at the estate sales down here - with the dark core and white outer, it is very striking. And the bandings on the agates are really, really pretty.

The Mojave has tons and tons of jaspers - all colors - but agate is hard to find. There are places you can find petrified Palm root - I have a 5 gallon bucket from my first field trip that is probably mostly leaverite but I have never even gone back through it to look it over.

Thanks to you both for the fun trades, Ellen

I received my treasure box from Andy today. I am very happy with the content. He sent me a piece of pet wood and I check it under a blacklight. I do this with every piece of rock I bring home to see if it is fluorescent. To my suprise it fluoresced a nice orange/red. I posted a picture of it in my album or you can view my profile and I put a link to my album. He also sent me a nice piece of carnelian agate and a few other pieces of local material. I will be happy to swap with you again Andy.
Thanks for the great swap
Tom (AZrhound)
