Wow Tom, you found s bunch of stuff. You may want to try a tripod when taking the pics. I think most of the burring is from you moving when taking the picture. I know when I spend the time to use one when I am taking pics, it sure helps. Paul Do you find this valuable?

Hey, does it matter what the form the agate is in? If not, Tom and I will win hands down. We will be after the big ones starting June 7th for t-eggs and I know where the big ones are at. Yah hoo. We got em Tom. Looking forward to finding some of that nice wood from Sweet Home this weekend too. I will post our outing and would be great if others could join in.

Hmmm, this does pose a bit of a question. What is an agate and what will qualify as an agate. I know what I call an agate but that may differ from others. But since there are no agates around here, I won't have to worry about it. lol

Hope you get some good wood this weekend! enjoy! Paul

true
T-Eggs are a class of their own and I would not call them agates as applies to this contest.
So as much as they may be agatized inside i would have toleave them out.
The agates I have been posting are right off the site. No clean up or polishing done to them.
since they are recent wash outs from the banks they are all frre form and not rounded.
The agates Andy finds are more worn from movement and so this does reduce their over all size but not their quality. Andy's agates are stones moved down by glacier movement and things so they don't have the wide variety of shape the western stones have. How ever there are some like those in the pit he started hunting that may come out more uniquely shaped and of good size since they are being freshly exposed by the pit work. Makes a guy wonder what beauties went to the crusher.

Good Link
MAn do I have some more studying to do,,lol. I thought I knew a little bit about agates but that is exactly what I knew,,a little bit. There are so many varieties and formation combinations I could fill my house with samples,,,hmmmm,,might be an idea. Wonder how the wife would react,,,lol. Oh well guess I will stick with the local stuff and stay out of trouble for now.

Okay, Okay. Guess I am going to have to look some of my old huants. Maybe when in Sweet Home I check some of the local creeks. Chandler Mt. is close by but it has been years since it was open. Might get lucky. Then in Prinville, might head to Maury Mt. for some nice red and green moss agate. Love that stuff. Do you find this valuable?

Hey Don I think prinville and maury mtn are two top agate choices. I have not had the pleasure of hunting them myself but have seen some very nice stuff from both at rock show's.

Hey Paul
I am only going to put three in the contest but all were found While searching for contest enrties. So just posted the days finds and to show what twelve pounds of agates in a spiderman bucket looked like,,lol. I am going to edit the ones for the contest with entry numbers so people will know which ones they are.
The ones I get with Sharon this sunday I will be more selective of which I post on that page. Took a couple of tripod pics today and they were much better so after sunday I will have better pic's to post.
Take Care

Just where in Sweet Home did you find this? I lived in Sweet Home when one was able to get Holly Agates and Petrified Wood from the actual forest!! Alas, no longer able to, since areas are closed to public!
Just curious from Newport, OR!!

That agate was actually found in Washington State,Benton County,Richland at a Sand and Gravel pit.
Over the years gayle the poor public has taken it in the shorts when it comes to enjoying our public lands and the pursuit of recreational opportunities thereon.
Ah yes the good ol days. .............Newport,Ore great spot or starting point for marine fossils isn't it. Always remember as a kid going to the aqauriam there.

Cool, I thnk Sharon will have a kick hunting thme agates. Of course you have an additional spiderman bucket for her as well - right?? My understanding is no spiderman bucket, no agates. lol

Yeah the tripod really helps. Them stinky digitals take so long to focus and if you move every so slightly the pic will be blurry or out of focus. To me, I still prefer the old 35 and that film stuff that use to be around.

Man it is going to get hot over here this weekend. I am glad all them agates hide when it gets hot. They don't like sunburn you know. Andy may have to get up early to catch'm before they go to thier hidy holes. Good thing them agates don't mind gettin' wet or else poor Tom would be agate less.... lol Good hunting to you all! Paul

59. pre scout for sunday
May 16 2008, 9:53 PM EDT | Post edited: May 16 2008, 9:53 PM EDT
Hey All
Went out today with my brother to pre scout a couple of new places I was thinking of taking Sharon on sunday. Man did we get some good ones. 9lbs in two hours and such a variety too. All surface finds, didn't do any screening tho I really wanted too. Did pull two out of the bank that were partially exposed so I conted them as surface finds cause I could see their surface,,lol. My brother got one real beauty of a carnelian and the banding in it is super. We got yellows, clears, smokys, carnelians, and tangerines. We got geod type and banded and some with druzy. My brother found a fossil too. Way cool, it was a small fern fossil. Just the top two inch's or so but still a fossil. Will post pics later.
