"Paul I guess you would have to start with a fairly large agate say a 1-2oz clear translucent to get a 6-8 ct faceted stone.Guess it would matter on the # of cuts or angles 2 I suppose. Keep up the great work err I mean fun. >> Andy"
Hi Andy, I don't know about ounces but sometimes you have to cut up a big piece to get to a small piece of good stuff. But if the rough is clean and clear you can get away with a pretty good sized finished cut from a smaller piece. When you go to school take good notes as I will be picking your brain about this stuff. lol I really don't know the actual cutouts if you will of a piece. You are right it depends on the cut - shape, number of facets, whether you cut to maximun yield or to a calibrated size. You are right it is fun and can hardly wait for you to start to enjoy the world of faceting and cabbing. Paul

Me to Paul..........way things are going it could very well be my next vocation. An assocciate of mine has said if I get the education he"ll get the equipment. His F/partner and daughter are amoung my rock hunting buddies. He loves the finnished product such as the ones you just completed with the carnelian & tourmaline. I showed him the pic's of your handywork & he was impressed. The rough doesn't do a thing for him as does the thrill of the hunt. But to see the before and the after of the stone amazes and excites him. Do you find this valuable?

Say Paul do you have a light refracter/reflector or whatever is used to determine a stones translucency. Is there such a thing? Rained CATS & WESTSIDERs (he he) day before yesterday but yesterday it was a bright, clean and refreshing day after the torrential downpour >>>>>>>>> set a record here for total amount in a day.Anyway revisted the gravel pit and several surrounding locales and ended up with some very nice nodules.
Going to have to take back some slabs to work with for that school in Sept - cab class.
Watcha gona facet next?

Hey Andy, no I do not have a refractometer or whatever they call that thing. I just us a good full spectrum light and a solution called refractal. It works pretty well. There are different chemicals and solution that have the correct refractive index for gems. You get the right solution with the gem, when you put the gem in to it, it almost disappears, then you can se inside of the stone and see the inclusions or flaws. I put a sunstone in the solution some time ago and I actually had a hard time finding it and getting back out. The only thing I could see was a blue hue/rays. It was amazing. I am sure you will get to learn all about this stuff this summer. Hey if you get a chance you ought to get this book "Faceting for Amateurs" by Glenn and Martha Vargus. There are 4 editions, but the 3rd addition has always been recommended to me. These can be sort of expensive, but it is a good book.

You talk about rain, we are in a frog choking down pour right now. We can always use the rain, but geez. I guess it is a good day for wood and faceting. lol Glad you are having a nice day, gunky here.

Well what am I going to facet? I was working on a topaz but stopped to do your agate and Ellen's tourmaline so probably a topaz. I have some fluoride crystals that Ellen sent up dopped and ready to go too. I stumbled on to another deal recently. All my penny's plus some I didn't have are all gone now. I ended up buying out a gentleman who had a lot of equipment and rocks. Lots of rocks. Anyway, I now have to get things moved around and setup the new stuff. Also look through boxes of rocks - Jeff likes doing that. It is kind of like Christmas. I have plenty of cabbing material now

Keep out there hunting them agates, only a couple of days remaining for the agate contest. Paul

Ok Guys
First off I am a Sundancer for the nation not a rain maker. Second is the creator probably figured with all the schooling you were about to start he should moisten up your cranium so you could absorb the knowledge soon to be offered you. Thirdly and lastly there is a quote which goes" into each life alittle rain must fall" thus to greater appreciate the pleasurable things in life. So quit whining and get out and get wet and Be Happy,la te dahl tra la,tra la.

Got you two covered don't worry. Will make sure you both get egged since you can not come, hehehe. The plan is for all three of us to drive a little bit. I wont drive very much because I can not handle the seat belt across my shoulder for very long. I tried slipping it under my arm but then it pushed on the shoulder blade and that was more uncomfortable. But by this time tomorrow if Livy remembers the fixins we should be enjoying SMORES and stories at the Sagebrushminers claim.Hi Ho Hi Ho a digging we will go

You got that right Andy, busted up wing or not he can move some dirt.

Now Tom you are suppose to be out in the rain, you live there and you like rain. There is some saying about getting out of the rain or something like that, but I can't remember. Must be the lack of rain. lol

You have a great crew going with ya Tom. Have a great time and watch out for them critters down yonder. My understanding those t-eggs are really, really mean down there. But if'n you can catch one or dozen, they are beaut's!! I wish I was going as along most others on here I presume. Be careful and have fun! You too Dave and Rockpuppy and of course Don the host and his crew as well.

Andy who ya think will find the first 6" whole, un-fractured egg??? You know I always wondered what would happen if the thunder was still in the egg when you open it up. Would it run out like a chicken egg? Like t-rex egg? A mystery we may never know. lol

Have a great time you guys! Paul

Oh unlearned one
The thunder never leaves the egg. The Wakia are the spirit of the creation and their power remains with the creation. those who know the songs can call the Wakia and use their medicine to help others. Those who do not can be harmed in the trying. MY name tells people I am known to the Wakia. I will not give my name here for very obvious reasons but some day I may share it with you. That is one reason I do not sweat the weather when traveling. There are many things to learn in this world and not all can be touched with the hand.
