Cryo-Genie was FUN!
Jun 29 2008, 12:31 AM EDT | Post edited: Jun 29 2008, 12:31 AM EDT
We recently visited the Cryo-Genie mine & had a blast (pun fully intended). Dana, the mine owner, gave our family of 4 a private mine tour & then let us dig in the tailings. The tour was absolutely fascinating & Dana was such a hospitable host. We had fun digging in the tailings & there were probably only about 4 other people around digging with us. It was very cold at the end of May when we were there, but we stayed until our fingers were too numb to move. Of course, we didn't find anything gigantic, but we found several pencil-lead sized tourmaline pieces - one was even pink + green!
I can't wait to make this an annual trip! Thanks, Dana!

I am glad to hear you had a great time. Do you have any pictures? We have heard about problems at the Himalaya Mine so it is encouraging to hear about a positive experience at Cry-Genie mine. Could I post your report on the National Directory?

Hi Bill,
I do have some photos of our "finds" but I have no idea how to post them here. I think I'll just try to email them to you. We are absolute novices, but are now officially addicted. I saw in your bio that you enjoy treasure hunting in AZ. Where do you go? We live in Tucson.
Feel free to post my report anywhere you wish - share the fun!

A second method is to go to Photo Gallery click (ADD PICTURE) a pop up will ask if you want to browse your pictures. Click browse an follow the instructions. You can add comments to your pictures. You can also create an album.

As you post more pictures you might want to create your own photo gallery. You first add pictures to the gallery as I outlined, Then you clicK create album. Once the album is created you can add as many pictures as you want. I will post your report and pictures to California in the National Directory.

This is so good to hear after as others have stated about the Himalaya mine. Tourmaline is a cool gem and so beautiful. I have order material (RMM Remote Mining Material) and when screen and sorting, I keep every little chip. lol It is pretty stuff. Glad you had a good trip and are reedy to go back. That is a good sign about any dig site. Hope you can start searching in AZ and close to home. There has to be lots of stuff there. Have fun and keep reporting you trips and finds. Keep Rockin'! Paul

Hi Barbara, First off, Welcome to the wiki. If you'll check the bottom of this page, you'll find lots of info about tourmaline. Just click on any of them, and start reading the content. Some of our members live in the area, and may be able to guide you to good hunting areas. Kids are always fun on rockhounding trips. Those young eyes can spot things that us older folks miss. Have fun, and good luck.

Hi Barbara, welcome to the wiki. Hope you find it as much fun and full of info as many of us do.

As for the tourmaline, there are a couple of real addicts on here. Hopefully they will chime in on this thread. You may want to read this thread, the last couple of pages at least which talks about the Cryo-Genie mine being closed but other mining options in the area. Here is the link: http://cash-and-treasures-wiki.travelchannel.com/thread/1074913/Oh+I+want+to+go+hunt+tourmaline...?offset=180&maxResults=20
I think this is the link to the second to last page.

Be sure to take some pics of your trip and post them along with a trip report. Have fun and good luck with the tourmaline. It is some great stuff! :-)

Paul
