Graveland Point
Jul 5 2008, 9:22 PM EDT | Post edited: Jul 5 2008, 9:22 PM EDT
One of my favorite Western Agates is Graveyard Point. Has anyone collected at the site recently? I have a great deal on high quality Graveyard. What a weird name for such a beautiful agate. You would think it would be called Autumn Folage Agate or Oregon Showy Plume Agate. Good GP is selling for a great deal for rough and finished pieces.

Bill,

How about posting a picture of one of your agates. It's good to see what the rest of you are able to collect.

Sigh, I only have sand in my backyard.

Hey Bill, have you had a chance to dig there before? I never have. Frankly didn't know where to find it until I did some research. Look like there are some claims there but there is also some open areas to hunt too. Pretty stuff. Paul

I posted a picture of Graveyard Point. It has to be at the top of the Plume agates. The plumes seem to float in the clear chalcedony. I have not been to GP but friends of mine were out there recenty and came back with some great material. A close freind passed away and I helped his widow sell his massive collection. June gave me a good amount of GP for helping her. There are other plume agates that are the caliber of GP, Mexician flame agate, Texas Woodward, Carey Ranch Oregon and a few others. I was in Boise not long ago I did not have time to make to to GP which is in Oregon but is reached from Oregon.

I either need another cup of coffee or need to proof read my postings, The last post should read from Idaho and obviously this thread is about Graveyard Point and not Graveland. Maybe I was thinking of Graceland in Memphis. (No agate there)

The cabs I have made from Graveyard point sell as quick as I can make them. People love this agate and I do too. It does not look great in the rough but when it is cut and polished- it is out of this world. What I like in an agate is the plumes or dendrites or bands that appear to be floating in water (clear chalcedony). My best Paint Rock has that three dimensional property. I have ribbon agates that look like a red ribbon frozen in glass.

That Graveyard plume is cool stuff. Just need a location to look for it. Then set up a gathering about mid August and see what can be found. I should be back up and about by then if all goes well.

Love graveyard point plume agate. Our club had a trip there a couple of months ago and was lucky enough to be there when the claim owner just opened up a huge vug about 4 by 20 by 5 feet and was pulling out beautiful plates of multicolored angel wing agate with plume in it. I missed that trip and would've love to have some. The last time I went there was about 6 years ago and we had permission to dig and we all total brought out about 1 ton of some real nice material. Fairly high on my list to go again. Don Do you find this valuable?

I have to laugh. You know I look at these threads and like this one you took out with a group quite a bit of agate. Where do you put all of that stuff. Then I think about all the hard core collectors out there with years and years of collecting and trying to figure out where they store all of there treasures. I mean I have a few boxes, tubs, buckets of rocks but some of you guys must have huge yards and acreage to store your finds on. I just find it amazing. Then it hits me. I go look at my house, and I am surrounded not by hard stuff but by wood. LMAO!! I am in the same situation as the long time rock collectors. Instead of rocks everywhere it is wood everywhere. In my case it is a lot! Piles and piles of wood out back, along the house, on the lawn, in front of the garage, in the garage/shop. There is wood or wood related stuff just about everywhere you look. And now I am getting into rocks more and more. Egads, when will it end. lol I guess at least the wood will eventually rot or get eaten by bugs. lol Well at least faster than rocks eroding away. I think it is great! Anyway, don't really know why I wrote this, but it was just a funny thought at least to me. Paul

I think the bug bits us in different places, but it still bits us. Kinda obscure, heh?
Anyway, I had to move because I did not have enough room!! Now I have an acear and a quarter and starting to run out of room again. I don't care. Love it anyway. I think I been out in the desert too long this time. Got back from Madras at Richardson's and pick up some real nice red, green, golden moss eggs and looks like they want sereral tons of the eggs from my claim. Going to have to get busy next trip in September. Should be a good one if I can get the hoe over there.
Oh well, we will see. LOL

Hey Don, I kow about wanting more space and land! lol

Man I would get that hoe over there - a couple of tons would probably make it worth while. lol

Hey by the way, on our So OR trip we will be leaving Klamath Falls on the morning of August 15th and heading up to Madras and the Richardson Ranch for some digging. Would love to get some of those red, greens and golden moss eggs. If you are in the area, let us know and we can meet there for a dig. We will be staying at Madras the night then heading on home the next morning, Depending on how we do the day before and our available funds will determine if we dig for a bit in the morning before heading north and home, though I think we will probably head right out to get home. Our trip has gotten delayed by a couple of days due to a commitment my daughter ended up having to make. We were going to try to stop by on the way down if everthing works out. .We head out on the 10th now but not until afternoon. We maybe able to stop by on 11th in the a.m.. if you are not working. I will let you know more as things gets closer. Aanyway, I hate wishing my life away, but I sure want August to get here fast. lol Keep rockin'! Paul

I don't know what that piece of graveyard set you back but it doesn't get any better. That will cut into several cabs that I would put at $50 - $60 a piece.
