Historic California Gem Mine For Sale
Jul 7 2008, 8:54 PM EDT | Post edited: Jul 7 2008, 8:54 PM EDT
The Fano Mine on Little Cahuilla Mountain in Anza, California (Riverside County) has been put up for sale. This is a tourmaline mine and some of the history is listed on the realty page - www.imrealty.biz

I was putting together a display case for my club's show which includes an aquamarine specimen from this mine. When I googled the name, the second entry listed the mine as being for sale. What a dream-come-true that would be to own a real mine. However, investing in 3 sons in college leaves very little spare change - so if there is anyone out there who would like to be "silent partner" - I can muster up plenty of free manpower to co-operatively work this mine on weekends. I would be interested except I just last year purchased a thunderegg claim in eastern Oregon and in the process of getting established. Would be great though to get a whole bunch of us together and start buying or claiming some of these places. Otherwise most of our old areas are going to be closed down or made into wilderness.

I wish Ellen! lol I can see Val now when I tell her, oh yeah by the way, forget the new house I am going to buy a mine in CA. lol All I can say is that I am glad I am too old to want more kids cause I am sure that there would be no way that I could produce more offspring if I told her something like this. lol

It would be a kick for sure! I can't get the realtors site to load properly. How much do they want for the mine? Heck make the boys go to work for you as miners and eacn their own way though college. :-o lol Paul

Hi Don, I like your idea of a bunch of people working together just to keep sites open.

Actually, I wish I could get a coalition of rock clubs to buy the claim - but the way our rock club runs, we debate for an hour to spend $200 for a new bookcase so I can't imagine trying to get a bunch of different clubs to get together and spend real money for an active mine.

My dream would be to own a claim to keep it open for other ordinary hobbyists like me to have access. I have an email out to the realtor - but I don't know if you have to prove you have serious assets before they talk to you (if so, that leaves me out big time - unless I can try to fool them that the doctor for the Lakers earns big bucks (not)). I figured it was worth a try to see what ball park they are asking - even if I know that it probably falls under the saying "if you have to aks how much, it is too much."

I've never been to any of the Riverside claims but have literally dreamed of going out there someday just to see them. At least for tonight, I can have sweet tourmaline dreams ...... Ellen

In the above article, it talks about $5 million for the Fano mine if I read it right. There are some other properties for sale in the region as well. Frankly I am hoping that they think that the Dr for the Lakers does make big money just to see what happens. lol Paul

Hi Paul, I can't get my sons to load the dishes much less count on them to work with me on rocks. I once offered to pay them to come to the Thursday Mine one weekend - just so they would see how beautiful the country is down there once you get off the freeway and away from the city. I couldn't offer enough to get any of the three to take up my offer. At least my 12-year-old daughter still likes rocking with me and appreciates the outdoors.

Try googling "Fano Mine for sale"and going to the realty site that way.

I couldn't get your link to work for me. I could get to a jewelry web site but I couldn't find anything about the Fano Mine. There must be gremlins

Maybe I can tell the realtor that I'm talking to a group of people in Washington who would like to invest in a mine and he'll take me to the mine so I can describe it to my "investor group". It is true - we would all like to invest in the mine.

I worked in the office 12 hours today and am brain-dead. Tomorrow is almost as bad. I should take in a piece of lepidolite with extra high lithium content to lick to keep me calm.

Pleasant raok dreams, all, Ellen

LOL what ever it takes. Sleep well.

The page header is "TOURMALINE MINES FOR SALE - P.O.R."
The info is about a 1/3 of the way down the page. The paragragh below "The California Enquirer reports "Tony Laurano is" it mentions the Fano Mine plus other land for sale. Dang gremlins!!

Yeah, we are interested for sure. Maybe I best start buying lotto tickets. lol

Here is the link for the mine sale: http://www.imrealty.biz/fano_gem_mine.html

But to get back to what Don was saying about filing claims. I am looking into it seriously. The initial fee's are not too great and the clean up bonds I have heard of are not overly high. When these shoulders are done and settled I will be real seriouse about filing on a piece or two so any who love the hunt will be able to have a place like Don has and hopefully a few more to be able to go. If we don't fight to keep our countries lands open for others them we cant cry when "others take them away" can we.

Hey Ellen, I had to chuckle a bit about getting your sons to do dishes and or more. I can relate! Life sure has changed in 1 generation. I grew up working, I can't get my kids to do anything without a huge battle. Except in my son's case. When it comes to outdoor fun activities, rockin', hunting, fishing etc look out and get out of his way. At least I have a great outdoor buddy. But ask him to do something around the house - whoa! lol I may not have liked doing chores growing up , but I certianly did it or well dad would use a little influence to ensure I did it. ;-) Is it great to see your daughter so interested. I hope it lasts a life time. My daughter use to like to go out and about, but those teenage years sure changed her. Something about phones and boys. argh. lol

Nuff about this. It will be interesting to see if the realtor gets back to you. He should I would think. Unfortunately we would all have to move to CA so we could all play at the mine. lol $5 mil is a bit out of my budget by about $4,999,996.27. At least Tom could double my investment. lol Let us know what you find out. Hope you enjoy your 12 hour day. :-o Paul

Hey tom, where are you looking at for staking a claim? It is a very good idea. Pretty soon if we don't watch it, the only rockin' will be on private land and that cold get on the very expensive side for collectors. Also isn't there a yearly minimum work fee in there somewhere. Very nominal as I recall. Good idea man! Paul

I got a quick reply from the realtor. He said he had listed the property a few years back at 2.5 million but that now the mine owner is willing to accept less since he needs money for drilling in Texas. He actually offered to show me the property. But - sigh - I admitted to him that he would be wasting his time showing the property to me. Darn - honesty can be its own reward and punishment at the same time.

I hear you about the changes in generations. My Dad was a first generation American and a blue collar worker - he ran a printing press. He taught me and my 2 brothers how to work and how to work hard and long. Maybe that's why I like it out in the field digging all day now and mucking out pits. This sitting in an office all day isn't good for the soul. Ellen

Whoo hoo, my stake in the venture just doubled! $2.5 mil is still quite a bit of money. I'll have to talk with Andy, the other "independently weathly" (according to Tom) eastern WA dudes to see if he can come up with the remaining capital. lol

I think agree with you about the outdoor digging and mucking. It is just plain fun and good brain therapy if you ask me. Just wish I was physically able to do more. Paul

As a licenced Washington state RE Broker I would be willing to broker the buyer's side and contribute my fee to the Co-Op as my share. What one wants & What one Gets in the RE game is quite often different > dependant on........subject to..........conditioned upon........and so on and so on. The Realty of the matter is Cash TALKS & BS Walks. Do you find this valuable?

The realtor wrote back with more info. The sellers of the Fano Mine needs to liquidate and even thou the property had been listed at 2.5 million, an offer under $500,000 possibly would be entertained as a fair offer at this time. I'd refer to this as a "fire sale" but considering the dry conditions and number of wild fires going on in other areas of California, this phrase might be misinterpretted.

He said that the Mine Owner has 2.4 million in cash sunk into a gas well in Texas & they are not down to the gas pocket yet. That it might be the deepest well ever drilled.

Unfortunately - where I'm at $500,000 is as silly as 2.5 million - but hey, I'll buy a lottery ticket on the way home from work today.

Still dreamin, Ellen

Hmmm, I doubt he will take payments. Sounds like a cash out thing. Though a cash offer will e desirable to him from what it sounds like. $500,000 is much more doable, but it would take someone with a ton of capital or cash that is willing to part with it. I would definately do some research on the property. How is the access and is it guaranteed? Any equipment included? Any envirnoment cleanup sites - super funds sites I guess? Water? Power? tons of stuff. Then what would be the return on the investment. Tom do you know Bill Gates by chance?? Maybe he could donate to a worthy cause. lol

Yeah Ellen I think I wouldn't use that term "fire sale" to loudly down there. lol Has the place burned yet? Maybe if we all go buy a lotto ticket one of us will get lucky. lol What a dream. Paul

Hey all
I was talking with Don about some claims down near his and I was looking at a couple of unrenewed claims up here. I sent for the information on the local claims and am waiting on them to come in the mail. Don said he would help me with the area he is in.. It would be great to lock up another twenty acres or so of T-Eggs for future generations. I travel too much to work it a lot but it would be a nice place to play and have one of my kids open during the spring and summer for people to come dig. I could put a little camp trailer on it and let them rotate staying there and helping people. With seven kids that covers a lot of summer,,,lol. And yes there is a minimum fee but Don talked to me about it too. So I am very serious about this and as soon as I get all medically done I am going to pursue it. Any and all are welcome to join and will post of any claims and info I find.

Sounds like a good plan Tom,

Down here, a few rock clubs have put claims to hold areas open for us regular folks. One club has an onyx claim in the Mojave and allows people to sign in and work it and also runs multiple trips there a year. My club has an interest in putting picking up an unrenewed claim, but no one has really stepped up to do the research so it hasn't gone anywhere.

Paul - about returns on investments on amine - that was a joke - right? It is about as guaranteed as getting your money's worth from a bag of "special mine dirt" ordered from the mail. Ellen
