When are you going?I would go on the Lake MI side of the Leeleenau Peninsula (my favorite spot). You can find some agate, Petoskey, Favosite, horn coral and others there. Many fossils are found. The farther north on the Leeleenau you go, the larger rocks. I do not find agates as large as is posted on this wiki - I suggest stopping at the rock shop in Honor, MI and pick up Bruce Mueller's book, Lake Michigan Rock Picker's Guide. Mr. Mueller owns the rock shop, will autograph your book and show you what you're looking for. While your near TC, take the kids to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. If you head north of TC along Lk MI, at Torch Lake you are able to pick many Petoskey stones. Mr. Mueller told me to go - there and I will next month. I found nice stuff at Peterson Park; everything I mentioned and more that I cannot identify. Hope this helps~ if you want more info email me. You can check out the Lake Michigan Stones in the photo album section. Pam Do you find this valuable? |

My husband, a friend and I will be heading over to the Petosky area in June, 2009 from Wisconsin, and need some ideas of where to look for rocks. We are interested in things we can use in our rock club's Lapidary workshop with both seniors and our kids group. I am from SE Michigan originally and know the area around Petosky and Torch Lake as I spent summers there. Any help would be wonderful. I read the previous post about the Leeleenau and that will be one of our stops in the 5 days we will be there. Thanks Dolly Do you find this valuable? |

She's an awfully nice person, and has been a big help to many of us. Welcome to the wiki. Shop around the various threads, and feel free to join in the conversations. We're a friendly group, although we do sometimes give each other a bad time. All in good fun. Petosky stones are neat. Especially for kids. Nothing like a good fossil to get a kids interest going. Hello Dolly! My best advice is to get Lake Michigan Rock Picker's Guide by Bruce Mueller from your local library/ or store. Better yet, stop at his rock shop in Honor, MI (near Traverse) and buy the book at his shop. He is a wealth of information and his book is excellent too! For fossils and petoskey stones ( & many stones that I really don't know the names of) one of my favorite beaches is Peterson Park in Leelanau County. Leelanau State Park at the tip of the Peninsula is another of my favorites to hunt stones. Both places offer large stones for lapidary. At Peterson, you will have to hike up a 70' or more dune. The State Park is flat land to the beach. If you're going that far, you should stop to visit Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. It is a beautiful park; however, you cannot collect stones in the national park. Bruce Mueller also has a Lake Supperior Rock Picker's Guide, which you may like to check out on your way here/home. Also, CaptPaul on Mindat is from Keewanau Peninsula in UP and he is very knowledegable about that area. If you need more information, email me. I have more areas. There is great pleasure in planning vacations, Pam 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Thanks so much. We will order the book so we can start planning our trip. We have two rock shows to attend in the next month or two and our local club's show this fall to work on, so this will be a nice break.Dolly Do you find this valuable? |

Dolly,There is a very nice rock shop in Christmas, MI called Sticks and Stones. I'm afraid I cannot remember the owner's name, but he's friendly and gave me a map to point me in the right direction. I don't know if you're planning on going as far north as the Keweenaw Peninsula, but I picked up a huge quantity of rock along the shoreline from Five Mile Pt northward until the road ends at Copper Harbor. My favorite beach was at the Great Sand Bay, a misnomer since it is totally covered with stones and there isn't any beach sand. Great Sand Bay is supposed to be known for Agates and Thomsonite. I don't know what Thomsonites look like, so I just picked "pretty" stones. I'm drawn to them like a crow to roadkill. There are also many old mines in Keneenaw; my son and I found a few pieces of copper and there were many rocks with verde green on them; maybe copper? Pam Do you find this valuable? |

Thanks for all the information. We will look for the rock shop at Christmas. We hope to get to the Keweenaw but that is easier to get to later in the year as we are in Wisconsin, so we may wait on that until Lake Superior is a bit warmer in late summer. We have found agates and Thomsonite in matrix on the west side of the Keweenaw. The Thomsonite that I have found are lovely little "globs" of pink and gray stone in other rock. Very pretty but I haven't seen much that is large. We have also found copper occasionally. There are places in the UP that have both copper and silver in them, but I have never been there, yet, but saw some that was found on a field trip last fall. We also have places in northern Wisconsin where we can find some nice Quartz crystals, but they are usually small. We love rock shops and always try to stop at everyone we find out about. It is fun to talk to the owners and buy a few things. Great memories of the trip rather than junky tourist stuff. LOL Thanks again to all of you. Dolly Do you find this valuable? |

Dolly, I believe there is still a rock stop on MI 41 that runs through the Keweenaw. I believe it is near Calumet. I've not been to that area for almost five years. Send me your snail mail address and I'll send a copy of my map to historic mine sites and agate & thomsonite beaches. It was the one given me by Sticks & Stones. Pam 1 out of 1 found this valuable.
