Thunderegg Heaven
Oct 4 2008, 11:42 PM EDT
Been collecting Oregon's State Rock for the better half of 20 years and appears I cannot stop. Went so far as purchasing a claim for them near the little town of Harper Oregon last year. We head over there a couple times each year and all are welcomed to come along and join the fun. Been doing well with some eggs weighing into the 100s of pounds. If you are looking for a fun outing, this is it.Don Esch--Sagebrushminer of the Sagebrush Prospectors 4 out of 5 found this valuable. Do you?

I have been to Don's claim twice and can vouche that there are alot of Eggs there and he does everything he can to make sure every one leaves with all the Eggs they want. On both occasions I was there I had a great time and the knowledge Don so freely shared was a bonus. The camping was fun and the evening visiting was relaxing with a free meteor show to watch each night too. If you are looking for an unspoiled place to get away and have a great time and learn about Thunder Eggs then Don's Claim should be on your list.Tom 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Hello TomBeen real quiet on the wiki lately and figured everyone was enjoying staying home and doing a bunch of cutting. Been busy here also. Got my trackhoe trailer all put together and hauled about 10,000 pounds for material from the claim the other day. Today I almost got my dump truck engine 100% put assembled. All left to get it running is add the oil, gas, and anti-freeze and should be ready to start. Then comes the wiring for trailer and some cosmetic work. You won't believe it. I purchased another claim this last week. 160 acrea gold claim in southern Oregon!!! Soo, besides thundereggs, we can all have some fun getting muddy and going after the gold. Woopie. I guess when it come to digging, it doesn't really matter what I dig. Hope everyone is doing fine. It's time to get the inside work done and get ready for the next go around next year. Take care all. "Hello TomHey Don Good to hear from you again. Figured yo was working hard toget ready for retirement. That's good news about the trailer. sounds like the dump truck is just about done. Get that wiring done and yuou will definately be ready for the spring fling at the claim. I have had a bit of interest up here from people thomas and I have talked too. So we may end up with our biggest group yet. The arm is finally starting to improve slightly. So hopefully I will have both wings next year and be able to do some real digging. Sounds interesting on the gold calim. The wife is really wanting toget down there and see thearea I want to file on. It looks as if that is a go for the spring also. I will get ahold of you after the new year and perhaps we can get together and start filing on it. I understand I need some markers and co-ordinants for the paper work. Is that correct. Can't ait to get it locked up so people can hagve future digging. Man I was looking over some of the proposed regulation changes that congress wants to pass and I sure hope they don't get them. The only winner will be big buisness and the government. The public will lose big time. Tom Do you find this valuable? |

Tom Glad to hear your shoulder is doing better!! Got ot get that puppy in shape for some serious digging. I really feel we need to move on getting that land locked up. The latest I heard is that they probably will not be issuing any more new papers on new claims after the first of the year. That makes it real difficult to get new ones. That's one of the reasons we got the gold claim in southern Oregon. Was available so we grabed it. Lol. The other thing they are trying to do is have all miners pay a 8 1/2% loyality on all profits of sale of materials. Hard one to prove with rocks considering no money made until sold. Gold might be a different issue since they have a set price. Still no loyalties until you sell some. Lol with them trying to collect. In the next couple of weeks, if not sooner, I will send you directions, including all paper work you need to file. Maps too. Maybe we can get this done via mail to them and not have to go to claim and county for the filing. As far as we are concerned, the land has already been posted and ready to go. Keep in touch. Hey Don, great to hear from you. Man you sound busy! I didn' think you were retiring until next May, man the way you are going now, you act like you are retired now. lol Glad to hear the equipment is nearly alll ready to fly. Lots of work man! What are you going to do with all of the eggs? About the claims, Tom is making a claim, and isn't Dave and Livy as well? Now is there anyother land there you think is worth while to claim and tie up for our use? You have the best lay of the land if you will. Let me know if there is anything worth while. I think the more area we can get our hands on, the better and sooner the better as well. Hey we are planning a long weekend at Madras next June. I want to hit a couple digs site while we are they. (that is the main reason for going there. lol) Do you have any recommendations? I would think that Richardsons and the Lucky Strike would make my list, but are there others around you would recommmend? Thanks, Paul Do you find this valuable? |

Hey Don sounds great. Lets get done what we can. I really want to keep all that we can for the public and to make sure we can have a locked up parcel. I am going to jump up to where I think that jasper claim used to be this week and if I am correct and find it I will see about claiming on it too. It is on dnr land. Send me them papers and I will fire them back off as quick as I can.Tom Do you find this valuable? |

Glad to hear from you folks again. Yes, we have been busy here. Looking into another 160 acres gold claim right next to the one we have now and who knows. 320 acres gives on a lot of land to play around on. Paul: Don't know for sure if Dave and Livy will be the claim on south edge of ours or not. I would almost get in myself but I feel having two already is going to really keep me busy. I hope they do because with all of us up there will make it a lot easier to work. Retired? Wish I knew for sure. The way the economy is, and with the work schedule I have, I don't know if my retirement monies will last long. Won't know halfway for sure for another few months.Lol !!! Tom: Let's procede with yours. I will send you the papers you will need to fill out and have you send them directly to the county and BLM and use my exiting makers to line up yours. The map I have will sufice their requirments and even though it is not marked yet, they will be able to figure it out. All we can do is give it a try. Normally they want location papers on site and I could always say they were there and must've gotten lost during the winter. Happens. What do you think? Keep in touch. Yeah DonLets get started and if need be I can make a run down and to the claims and do some leg work. I ain't about to let some little thing get in the way. It's only gas and time and that is not that big a deal compared tokeeping land open for people to use. tom Do you find this valuable? |

TomGot back from our new gold claim last night and what a butte. There is gold there and we are going to have a blast with this one. I will make a new album with a few pics and see what you think. Lots of wildlife, atv country, and 1/2 mile of dredgeable creek. Lovely. Wednesday I will put together the paper work put together for you and get it mailed off this week. On a new claim they charge $170 which I believe covers assessment work and filing cost. The county charges $16 but I think that is part of the total cost. I will mark on the map what I feel will be the best area for you guys to claim that you can send to Malheur and BLM. Keep in touch. Don Do you find this valuable? |

I have a question:I follow you guys threads and live your hunts - long distance; When you make a claim, is that for one year, or how long? If it is just one year, do you have to renew each year or can someone come in and swipe your claim? Hope I'm not being too forward; we don't have claims like this around here. I've got capitol set aside for any claiming .. if anyone needs a partner or is short of cash, or even if someone knows of a claimable area and cannot afford it let me know. I'd love to get something setup for the group here .. that would be really cool..

Boys and girlsI see everyone wants to get into the action. Easy getting a claim right now. After the first will be a little harder to do so if the rule changes go into effect. Don't know what impact there will be with us plain rockhounds yet. Pretty easy to get a claim. Find the public land that has something that can be proved has money value, file a locator with the residing county, $16 usually, and the BLM or Forest Service that the claim is on, usually $10, and the first annual assessment work fee of $126. If the land is open and claimable, same amounts each year unless you do assessment work and get the $126 waivered. As long as you keep up the fees and filings, yours until whenever. Washingcougar expressed some interest in the area south of our claim, but haven't heard anything from him for some time. Where are you at Dave? Do you find this valuable? |

"Boys and girlsWhat is the standard for prooving to the county that the land is profitable as a mineral claim? Is there a set in stone rule or is it open to interptation.. Since the fees are an ongoing thing with a claim, I suppose there must be lists of claims that have expired.. right? I would think that would provide a starting point if you have absolutly no idea where to claim land (i'm looking in a mirror :-)).. Or is there another method you recommend for locating claimable land .. Like get a list of active claims and go by them or something .. Do you find this valuable? |

Here is what Oregon has to offer for regulations for claiming land. They go from county to county offices to figure what is considered profitable for mining. So far, thundereggs can still be proven a profitable item, luckily since we have a 20 acrea claim already in Eastern Oregon. http://www.blm.gov/or/search/index.php?query=mining+regulations&pr=or&dropXSL=yes Here is a site I use to see if an area has active or inactive claims. Been very helpful to me in the past. http://www.geocommunicator.gov/GeoComm/landmin/home/landmin_mining-claims.shtm Hope that helps. Don 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

"Boys and girlsLivy and I both still here. Just caught up in the X-mas rush along with alot of other things. We have been trying to force ourselvies to stay home and and work on rocks and household projects but this time of year it is one family function after another. We are trying to get some of our Selway picture rock slabbed and cut to make into coasters for X-Mas gifts as well as makeing trivets out of pet wood slabbes. We are learning that you go through a lot of raw material to get workable material and haveing fun doing it. Dave Do you find this valuable? |
