Mark your calendars for this summer
Dec 3 2008, 9:47 AM EST | Post edited: Dec 3 2008, 9:47 AM EST
If any of you will be in central Oregon over the weekend of the 4th of July, there's a big rock show in Madras. There are daily field trips to area ranches usually closed to collecting. I'd also be willing to take anyone from the wiki to an area I've been exploring. I was down there this past weekend and found two more petrified trees. I'm pretty sure I know where several more are, but didn't do any digging there as I already had more than enough material. The largest piece taken this past weekend was around 80 pounds. It has beautiful grain patterns. I'll post some pics soon. Also found a chunk of agate around 20 pounds and a similar sized chunk of yellow jasper with a nice broad band of agate running through it. Incredible material, literally laying on the ground. Anyway, it's an area that doesn't look to have been dug in before at all and I'm anxious to go back. Let me know if any of you are interested. Oh, the digging is pretty easy. The last log I found using a piece of pet wood lying on the surface as a digging tool, lol. Backed right up to the log and started loading pieces into the car. Soft dirt, easy digging, lots of material. Scored about a 12 out of 10 on my rawk-o-meter!

Dan,
It sounds like it would be a lot of fun. I'll have to see what my companion would like to do at that time. Maybe we'll give it a shot. Have a nice day!

LOL You betchya Dan. You come down early then just stay through the 4th. That would give you some good rock huntin' time.

Good looking wood eh? Did you post a pic of it? I have been rather busy here lately and haven't checked all the new posts and pics. That must be a nice big ol piece of wood man...

No pics posted yet, but I hope to this weekend. Unless, of course, the gate to Studebaker Creek area is open again, which I doubt, lol. Do you find this valuable?

So how do you find out if the gate is open? Someone to call? If they open the gates for hunting, maybe they open them during the spring bear hunt as well. Maybe something to check out. Anyway have fun!

Studebaker Creek access is via the 1600 Rd off Headquarters Rd or the 4700 Rd off the 4100 Rd. Either gate being open will get you there!

Hi Dan

We are new to Wiki and new to the Madras area. We just moved to Clarno ( about 45 miles west of Madrs) on the lower John Day River. We've marked the calendar for the rock show, Thanks!

Could you tell us if there are any Rock clubs in the area? We are interested in learning about cutting rocks. We are finding a lot of agates and petrified wood but now we want to DO something with it and we're not sure were to start.

Welcome Pam and Jim ( looking over her shoulder)
There is alot of information on rock cutting here. We have threads that give information here at the wiki. Watch the community pages in your local paper and you will sometimes see Rock group meetings listed and up coming shows. There is also a directory of rock clubs on the net but I don't remember the link. Hope you have fun as I do and perhaps we will meet at a dig

There's a club in Prineville. There's a guy who collects rocks who lives almost across from the store in Antelope, he'd know if there are any closer. Richardson's Ranch would also probably know. Feel free to ask any questions.
