National Petrified Forrest in AZ
Dec 19 2008, 12:00 PM EST
I just uploaded some photos from my visit to the national pet wood forrest in Arizona from earlier this summer.. With one of the world's largest and most colorful concentrations of petrified wood, multi-hued badlands of the Painted Desert, historic structures, archeological sites, and displays of over 200-million-year-old fossils, this is a surprising land of scenic wonders and fascinating science. Anyone been there? http://www.nps.gov/pefo/ It's like a sea of wood .. pretty red and white wood.. If you have never made a trip to see this place, and you like petwood at all, this is a must visit bucket list place for everyone... http://cash-and-treasures-wiki.travelchannel.com/album/71928/National+Petrified+Forest+in+AZ In these photos, the crazy part is what you are looking at, every little spec of "sand" is actually wood. There are billions of pieces of little wood and hundreds of thousands of tree trunks .. Still gives me the shivers.. Do you find this valuable?

"now the mystery of the bent beak woodpecker has been solved...lolActually it was a trip all by myself.. I was driving home from a software installation in Abilene Texas via Arizona and Nevada ;) With my job i get to go all over the place and either watch software work, or fix broken software, so since I had the oppertunity to drive on the company dime how could i pass that up .. ;-) I cant suggest enough that you both get down there in your life at least once.. it is the most amazing place my words cant describe .. "Actually it was a trip all by myself.. I was driving home from a software installation in Abilene Texas via Arizona and Nevada ;)Fantastic place and across the highway is the Painted Desert. I like you love the place. Wood can be collected outside of the National Park. On Arizona I have posted a few good spots to collect wood near the Park. If you are caught collecting wood in the Park they will put you under the jail and lose the key. Great pictures! I have been a couple of times - once at night. It look black at night. Man it sure looks like it. I am glad that there are such areas set aside for all time. We need places like that. Just as long as the Government leave some areas open for collecting.Man I need a bazillion $'s and 2 good legs. So many things I want to do and look at and no dang money and legs. lol Time I got just not the other important stuff. lol Paul Do you find this valuable? |

Nice pics, Jake,I wish all of us were able to take a tour on the company dime. Maybe you'll get sent somewhere in the midwest; if so, call. The wood looks awesome. It would be hard to keep one's hands in one;s own pockets. Good weekend to you, Pam Do you find this valuable? |

This topic reminds me of something I read recently on a maximum limit of 25 pounds of petrified wood per day, and 250 pounds maximum per year being allowed in BLM (Bureau of Land Management) forests in Washington and Oregon. I was not happy with these laws as they seem very oppressive. Anybody else care to comment on these?http://www.mineralcouncil.org/wood.htm Petrified Wood: Petrified wood is available for collection on a free use basis in limited quantities as long as the collection is for personal, non-commercial purposes. According to regulations at (43 CFR 3622), free use collection weights are limited to 25 pounds plus one piece per day, not to exceed 250 pounds in one calendar year, and no specimen greater than 250 pounds may be collected without a special permit. The free use petrified wood must be for personal use only, and shall not be sold or bartered to commercial dealers. A material sale contract must be obtained from a BLM district office for collection of more than 250 pounds a year, or for commercial use. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |
