Lost Spanish Gold at Treasure Mountain in Colorado

The real story of Treasure Mountain...http://www.travelsos.net/colorado-journeyer/index.cfm?var_file=www/treasure.htm I actually know one of the descendents who wrote a whole book on the story... Citidel Mountain... he's made several expeditions to the area as have many many others. I had an Uncle who summered up there looking for the lost Frenchmens gold. He was an expert prospector and dowser... nope, never found it. However the story goes on that a couple of lost in a snowstorm cowboys sheltered in a cave up there and found the cache. They were only able to take 2 of the bars of gold with them, due to the weight, to Red Cliff and straight to the assay office. The bars were reciepted and noted that they still had the spanish mint marks. One was sold and the other supposedly resides in the Colorado State Museum. The two cowboys spent years looking for the cave again, but naturally as with all good lost treasure story's, they never found the gold again. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

If I found the Lost Treasure I would probably forgot where I found the treasure as well;) Conveniently they couldn't find it again. wink wink. Tell me everybody here. Have you ever in your life been on a hike regardless of the terrain and found a cave, and not remembered how to get there? LOL.

No doubt about it the country up there is rugged in the extream... The weather up there is legendary for deep snow and avalanches, very steep canyons... I've been horseback up in that country and can tell ya it'd be easy to never find that cave you were in during the snow storm. The cowboys never got rich ... so the treasure hunt goes on! Have you ever in your life been on a hike regardless of the terrain and found a cave, and not remembered how to get there? LOL. "Actually we have an area called North River about twenty minutes from my house that is a maze and a half. I grew up running those hills and ridges and canyons and there are quite a few places I stumbled onto that I have not been able to relocate. I found a Model T truck with a huge fir tree growing through it once. I wanted to get a picture of it so I hiked back out and the next day I tried to find it again and to this day I have not been able to . That was over 24 years ago. All the locals know that if you go into North river back woods take a over night pack cause you may be there that long. I have found spots with truly great and different stones and when I went to find them again they was not where i thought they were. So IF the terrain is right and the weather hard enough between seasons I can see something like a cave being lost. I am still looking for that model T but I make sure each time i go out I have my camera with me cause if I find it I may not find it again,,lol Tom Do you find this valuable? |

Todays price: $528,537.60USD, back in 1878, the price for 40 pounds would of been at least $10,000USD.

Besides there are many folks on this WIKI that have packed out 50 to 80 pounds of agates. If it was gold I would packed out more than 40 pounds. That's twenty pounds per cowboy. 10,000USD in 1878 was a fortune. Land sold for $10 an acre (good land)/ Sure hope you find the treasure. Bill Do you find this valuable? |

Moral of the story - Treasure Hunters don't leave home without your GPS, May want to return to that pocket of Ellensburg Blue or Opal seam up there yonder in the high country.

that is true if your gps works in the area your in. The north river area has dead spots that gps doesn't work in and so does the black hills by Olympia near rock candy mountain where there is an old gold mine that you can't get a reading at. But for 90 percent of the cases it does work and pays off. THe true moral is if you find it pack out as much as you can the first trip and blaze a wide trail,,lol.Tom Do you find this valuable? |

Adventure Guide. I was wondering were the two cowboys on horse back or were they wandering around in back country on foot? If I was on horse back, I would have packed out hundreds of pounds. I would not even have rode out, The two horses, my back pack. my friends backpack would have been loaded. The two cowboys sound like candidates for the Darwin awards. Hope you post the story on the Lost Treasure page. Do you take people on prospecting adventures in Colorado?Bill Bill Do you find this valuable? |

Howdy ... Yep, I take folks out to the gold fields and teach them to pan and sluce for gold and precious gems. I enjoy teaching folks how to recognize what they have found. We have 3, week long tours this summer to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Colorado Gold Rush. I have a friend that owns land on the South Platte in Fairplay, Colorado. The Fairplay placer has produced over 202,000 oz of gold, Stan's place has never been worked and some outstanding nuggets have been found very nearby. www.LearnGoldProspecting.comMy family got to Colorado in 1820... Great Great Grandfather was with the first band of trappers to come out from Independence Missouri thus blazing the Santa Fe Trail. Joseph Rutherford Walker... he went on to become a very famous mountain man. The story goes on about GGGrandpa Joe... really incredable! Led the Bonnieville Expedition, Discovered Yosemite, First to see the Giant Redwoods. Led Freemont on 3 of his expeditions, first to discover gold in AZ. Over 40 years of trailblazing and only lost 1 man in the whole time. Even more amazing is Joseph's brother Joel. He was on all those early expeditions as well, he led the first wagon train up the Oregon Trail, their baby was the first American born on the west coast. Both played significant roles in the Independance of California. Do you find this valuable? |

Howdy, horses need water and hay, bet they didn't have much of either on the trail in the middle of winter. The last thing you'd need in that rugged country is an overloaded horse to die on ya, they get tired and weak just like an overloaded granola snapper trying to hike the continental divide. They fall down, miss step, break a leg then ya gotta shoot 'em.Then there ya are out lost in the woods with hostile Indians and greedy prospectors about, and a load bigger than you can lift. I posted a reported to the Colorado State site about your adventure company.. Do you have a web site or email that I can post on Colorado. No, I would not load the horses to the breaking point (not a Darwin Candidate) nor would I venture to the high mountain wilderness with no supplies in the winter. They don't deserve to find the treasure and I certainly would not donate my bar to a museum. Were their names Moe and Larry. Howdy All,Most of my treasure hunting stories are at: http://www.LearnGoldProspecting.com Another South Park lost treasure is the story of the Reynolds Gang. They were the only invasion of Colorado Territory during the civil war. They stole mine payrolls and ranchers were robbed all the way across South Park. They got away with $40,000 in brand new greenbacks and two coffee cans full of gold dust. The possee finally cought up with them at the stage coach stop at Geneva Creek and the South Platte. Glen Eyre they call it, anyhow running battle up the creek to Geneva Basin where they burried the treasure in an old miners prospect hole. Clear up at timberline, they stuck a knife in a tree pointing to the treasure. Unfortunately a forest fire took the marker away... the possee shot most of 'em but as with all good treasure stories... Renolds got away... he was hunted down by a deputy cought and the story of the lost treasure written by an honest man...? One of the bandits was a man named Singeltary the possee cut his head off and pickled it in a big jar that was still on display in the Fairplay Hotel when I was a little kid. So how many of you want to go to Geneva Basin this summer with us? Don't ya think it would be a fun thing to do with your metal detectors? Do you find this valuable? |

Well I will have to add that to my list of things to do after I win the mega lottery. With the tribe I am raising I don't get to go play like that too often. But I would really love to go up in the colorado mountains and play for a few weeks if I could.Tom Do you find this valuable? |
