Lost TREASURE found!!!!
Feb 1 2009, 5:54 PM EST | Post edited: Feb 1 2009, 5:54 PM EST
Talk about lost treasure - how about finding the two largest colored gemstone deposits on earth. A new book describes the Grizzly Creek iolite - ruby -sapphire -kyanite deposit with gemstones that weight as much as a million carats in the rock outcrop, and the Sherman Mountain iolite deposit with >1 trillion carats! and the Cedar Rim opal deposit with giant opals up to 100,000 carats near US287!

Just came across a new book on Booksurge (and Amazon) which describes some fabulous gem localities including opals >100,000 carats, iolite >1 million carats and more. I followed up on a couple of localities and I have a few thousand peridots, garnets and emeralds. HIGHLY recommended - Gems, Minerals & Rocks – A Guide for Rock Hounds, Prospectors & Collectors

The book even describes ways to use the internet to find diamond deposits.

Howdy All, yep US 287 runs through Colorado and up into Wyoming. No doubt about it US 287 runs right through some amazing geology! Here is a link to one of Dr. Hausel's articles on the diamond fields in the area.

While you are looking for diamonds out there remember to keep your eyes open for the loot that Jack Slade stole from the US army in the 1860's. Jack Slade and the Virginia Dale Stage Robbery... famous story. http://www.learngoldprospecting.com/index.cfm?var_file=jack-slade.htm

A gold shipment of over 200 lbs that amounted to $60,000 in freshly minted coins (about $2.6 million dollars today) was being shipped by the US Government, and the shipment represented several month's of back pay for soldiers at the fort. Masked men ambushed the stage carrying the gold, and made off with the entire payroll about a mile north from the Virginia Dale station. The robbers were chased down and killed by the US Cavalry, the troopers did eventually find the iron strong box in a nearby creek, broken open and empty. The stage line suspected that Slade was the mastermind for the holdup, but were unable to prove it. The owners of the stage line felt they had no other choice and fired him.

This is only one of the stories that the overland stage lines was the focus of. Many a story of indian battles, and stolen loot revolve around US 287.

Sorry to get back to you so late. I'm still trying to figure out these treads. Anyway, the book is available on Booksurge (http://www.booksurge.com/Gems-Minerals-Rocks-of-Wyoming-A/A/1439218560.htm) or on Amazon at: (http://www.amazon.com/Gems-Minerals-Rocks-Wyoming-Prospectors/dp/1439218560/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1234539705&sr=1-1).

Hmmm, here is my take. If the stage coach bandits were killed, and no gold was found on them, and the iron strong box was discovered open and empty in a nearby creek, I would assume these guys were accomplices and they handed over the loot to somebody else who made off with all of it. All the bandits involved in the robbery were killed, and therefore the person primarily responsible for this robbery got away with all the loot and no witnesses to tie him to the robbery. I imagine that loot isn't buried somewhere around there, it was probably in the next county by the time they found that strong box.

Thanks,

Aaron

The story of Jack Slade is a long one and hard to put into a couple of paragraphs.
Back then Virginia Dale was waaaay out in the country... there was really no place for the bandits to spend any money that wouldn't be immediately noticed.
Jack was the "mastermind" and he moved to Montana where he died pennyless 3 years later when he was hung by vigilanties for being a horse thief. Overland stage agents watched him the whole time... never showed any of the loot... so Jack didn't have it... or the chance to go get it.
