Thanks WIlli, I found it. It is the “Bahia Emerald” and has been a controversy for many years. If you look at the picture there are some nice crystals, however, the whole piece is not all emerald. I have heard its value as low as $30,000 and of course up. I know my gem guru knows a lot about it, I will have to try to get in touch with him and get the skinny on it. But I don't think it is worth $750,000,000. Man if it is, the emerald market is ripe. I best sell all mine! lolPaul Do you find this valuable? |

Green is my favorite color. . .I'd take an emerald over diamond anyday. I was mesmerized by the one at the Smithsonian; Hope diamond didn't do much for me. Pam Do you find this valuable? |

"Green is my favorite color. . .Yeah, I think I'd do the same, however I do have thing for champagne diamonds - which they are now calling "Chocolate Diamonds" and stirring up a whole bunch of interest making the prices go up. I've found a few links for the articles if anyone wants to read up on the news about the Bahia Emerald beauty..... jeeze 840 pounds! http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29469480/ http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29498601/ (just posted today about 8:00 Central time) http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,503808,00.html Do you find this valuable? |

10. 3/4 Billion Dollar Emerald - Looks like a Scam
Mar 4 2009, 4:16 PM EST
"Hey, I think I would like one or two of these. But I have to agree - I also like the champagne diamonds. I'll have to check the stories out on the emerald.Hmmm, I just looked at the article and the photo - looks like it could be a bit of a scam if the photo is valid. The photo attached to the article shows several small beryl crystals (I'm not even convinced they are emeralds based on color and clarity, but its difficult to tell in a photo) in a large piece of rock matrix. I suspect that they included all of that waste rock in their weight and it looks to me like they might have only 10 to 15% beryl. I don't see how that specimen could even worth a few $thousand unless they news media is showing the wrong specimen. But that's the press for you. They are about as trustworthy as politicians. But the press will announce a huge find at a tourist attraction and the picture shows a piece of low quality beryl or corundum. If you visit some of the tourist gem sites some of them do the same thing. They will show a guy in shorts, Hawaiian shirt and a straw hat grinning real big and holding a 1000 carat piece of red corundum worth maybe $20 as a specimen. The caption will read Jim Smith of Columbus, Ohio finds Zillion dollar ruby. There are legitimate mines and it is true James Hill has found some nice emerald but zillion dollar rubies in NC are rarer than hen's teeth. One has to ask a simple question. If the owner could find zillion dollar rubies why is he living in a trailer parked on the property and charging tourist $5 a bucket? He has one 1967 Chevy Truck on blocks and his wife drives a 92 Yugo. Bill. Do you find this valuable? |

He has one 1967 Chevy Truck on blocks and his wife drives a 92 Yugo.Yeah but NC does have some nice gems to be found. Every once in a while a real remarkable one shows up. I have found facetable gems in all the buckets I have received, some pretty nice too. But worth a zillion, naw, 100's or 1000's yes. But with gem buckets, at least you get something when you are done. I would rather spend money on something like a gem bucket then going to the movies for a couple of hours of entertainment. There has been lots of controversy over the Bahia Emerald for many years There are a lot of smaller crystals in the matrix, but I agree, 15 to 20% could be crystal the rest is just ol' junk! lol As a specimen, it is neat and probably worth 1000's of dollars, but the extra 0'sin value probably isn't there. I always work the tourist mines when I am in North Carolina. They are lot's of fun. I never have gotten rich at the mom and pop mines but like you said its beats throwing $15 for a movie you did not want to see in the first place. We traveled to Franklin almost every summer and it still is one of my favorite vacation spots. I like the off road non-tourist sites best. I do not like the salted mines they are a rip off. The Mason mine is one we would stop at. Bill Do you find this valuable? |

Many of them are country folk, and yes the reports of big gems from them state overinflated prices, but the more successful of them are making major bank. I looked into buying one of the more well-known ones last year that was for sale...they were netting hundreds of thousands of dollars a year and were worth millions in inventory andproperty. "I have some champagne diamonds from the argyl mine that I got many years ago. Maybe I should call them chocolate and double their value eh?? LOLYes you could, and I'm NOT kidding. I purchased one several years ago for almost nothing and had it put in a custom pin design, it was light enough that in the gold setting you couldn't tell that it was a champagne diamond and it was beautiful.. 3/4 carat. Unfortunately, the pin fell off my blazer somewhere in never never land and I've lost it now... whaaaa, sniff, sniff. :-( Do you find this valuable? |
