You will need a small hand pick, a rock hammer, a back pack (strong enough to carry rock). If you hard rock mine you will need chisels, a small sledge and safety equipment.(safety glasses. gloves, heavy clothing and good hiking boots). A good shovel is needed in most cases. Water is a must. Read safety guidelines in Rockhounding for Dummies. The kind of equipment depends upon the type of treasure you are after. If you are interested in Gold a metal detector is a handy devise as is a gold pan and a dredge. Start out small and add equipment as you need it. A compass or a GPS are needed to keep from getting lost. Never go into the wilderness alone. If you get hurt you are in real trouble if you are by yourself. Join a local Rock & Gem Club or Gold Prospectors Association. (See new page listing clubs.)
The equipment can be found online (see our classified page) some tools can be bought at Harbor Freight, or Lowes. Check out your state ,AZ, on the National Directory for sites.

The wife and I prospect in the Bradshaw's, lots of great places the Antelope Creek and Big Bug drainages have a lot of potential for the weekender. Be careful not to claim jump... nearly all of the area East of Congress is claimed by somebody. There is a large area on Lynx Creek about 10 miles south of Prescott open to public panning. Panning ONLY! no mechanical devices allowed, no sluce box or crack sucker... they'll confiscate your equipment... so I'm told.
We've found some great pieces of gold ore near there... one piece assayed 36% GOLD! Lots of Pyrite and black sand so don't be fooled!
I hope you can come out to Colorado this summer We'll teach you alla 'bout it!

If it is claimed there will usually be some type of markers visible at several locations. That is one of the requirements on gov land. Of course if its Pvt. just smile and ask for permission. :). But to answer your question one of the places Claims are filed is at the County Court house of the County your checking on. Hope that info helps ya. Bills Idea is also one way too. DB

Go to the local BLM or Forest Service office, prolly at the court house, and you can research all the claim locations. The BLM folks I have workde with have been very helpful.... that's also where you go to file a claim.
DeLorme, makes atlases (maps) that have the private and Gov. land pretty well defined, plenty good enough for the first trip to an area. If you find a place you want to know about take that location to the BLM/FSO and look it up. Many places have been claimed in the past but never "proven up on" so they go back in the unclaimed pile. Kinda like URL's on the internet.
Best of Luck!

Johnny
