Field Trip for Obsidian Mid May.
Mar 15 2009, 3:39 PM EDT
The NW and CA Federation of Mineralogical Societies are having a get together May 20th thru the 25th at Lassen Creek Northern CA for Obsidian. See article in the March issue newsletter of NWFMS under clubs & organizations to the left in search this site box. There is a nice map the Forest Service puts out on their site. Look up Modoc National Forest - Recreation Actives on the right hand box click on rock collecting, once there click on Obsidian Mine Map and print out.I have collated down there for many years and know the best spots to go and how to dig them. At Lassen creek is the Electric Blue, it can be a challenge to dig that material but I will be there to show you the best way to do it. I will bring samples of rough and finished pieces of the four sites down there, plus I will be giving away some finished pieces in some type of drawing or raffle all five days of the rendezvous. Prior to meeting at Lassen Creek on Wednesday May 19th I will be at Glass Butte digging for Fire and Flame Obsidian. Anyone who wants to join me is more than welcome. I will arrive there on Saturday May 16th in the afternoon and be there for a few days. At mile post 77 on Hi-way 20 about half way between Bend & Burns take a right over a cattle guard and stay on the main road. I will be some where eighter before the cattle pond on the right or on the hill above the pond. I drive a white Mazda pick up with a lid on the back. I have a map of Glass Butte that the BLM produced for mining claims that I can send you. It show all the roads and what type of material is there. Just send me a message with your e-mail address and I will forward it to you. I am really looking forward to this trip. At the rendezvous there will be tailgate displays, map exhanges a great way to meet others and learn about other collecting areas. If you have any questions or need more information just let me know. Glen, Thanks for the heads up!!! I'll have to talk with David, but this is something I've really been wanting to do! It would be awesome to be able to find a few nice samples from different areas. But no matter how bad I'd like to, we wouldn't be able to make the Lassen Cr. unless we had a whirlwind 3 day weekend and memorial day weekend is already booked. To bad too, that electric blue is one of the most beautiful stones I've ever seen and would love to eventually collect some. Livy Do you find this valuable? |

Glen,You still planning on being at glass butte 16th & 17th next month? I've worked the schedule so that we can drive down that way Friday afternoon/evening and then head home mid-late Sunday. Are there any places we can pitch a tent or park the camper in the area. Would really be nice to finally meet you and hopefully have you point us in the right direction. Liv,Yes that is still my plan. I will be leaving Bonney Lake about 6 AM on Saturday. It's a 5 1/2 or 6 hour drive from here. There are a few camp area's . After you turn on to the dirt road from the Highway go down to where there is a road to the left. You will see a nice flat area for RV parking , to the right of the road there is another area where the flint knapper camp. I usually like to camp at the next area on the right a little ways down the road. It has enough room for campers RV etc, I only have a tent and I like the spot first one on the left after turning into the camp area. Give me your e-mail address and I will send you a PDF of the BLM map of Mining Claims that show the roads and the different material there. Since you are going before me you will have some time to check out the differents spots. I have been checking the weather there and down at Lassen both have been cold, cloudy and rainy. But I am hoping by the 16th we will atleast have a little sun once in awhile. If you are going to be in a tent or even a camper it is going to be really cold at night so come prepared. I will also being meeting up if some members of the Puyallup Valley Gem club which I belong to down there. So we can all get together and do some serious digging. Liv, since you are only going to be there for a little while and I had already planned on bring a bunch of material with me to give away and I will make sure you get some real nice pieces of Fire and the Electric Blue. Looking forward to meeting you and we will have some fun digging. Glen Do you find this valuable? |

Well, we're all packed and ready to go. Can't wait til tomorrow afternoon when we can finally head out. I'm hoping there will still be daylight left when we pull in. We're bringing our Dark Blue 2500 Dodge Ram with a camper, though we'll probably take the camper off so we can navigate the roads easier. Just a quick question. Are small campfires allowed? If so we may bring some wood. Can't wait to finally meet you.Livy Do you find this valuable? |

LivyYes you can have camp fires. Most of the spots have a ring of stones to make a fire in. I am bring firewood myself , it can get chilly as the sun goes down. I will be driving a 97 Mazda 2300 White pickup with a matching lid on back. I am taking off from here about 4 AM so should be down there around 10 or 11. see you on saturday. Glen,The camping area you were earlier talking about...Is that on the main road past the knappers camp or on the road to the right? Livy Do you find this valuable? |

the camp is just pass the knapping camp area, main road on the right. You will see two roads into the area. one goes at a angle, it is a little rough. go just a couple hundred feet it has a nice wide turn in. Big open area with trees around the outer edges. It should be real close to Gold Sheen on the map or maybe the first M Gem 2 Glen Do you find this valuable? |

Well we're finally home, got in about 1200 last night. Loonnnggg Drive home for sure but thankfully I didn't have to go to work this morning. The weather was near perfect with a nice breeze to help keep the edge off. Got just a little to much sun even with SPF 30 on but should be good to go by this coming weekend at the Snake River. Finally got to meet Glen and really enjoyed visiting and digging fire obsidian with him as well as learn a bit along the way. He gave me a few amazing pieces of electric blue that he had earlier collected down in Cal. Beautiful stuff, gonna have to find time, somehow, somewhere, in our schedule and do a marithon trip so I can collect some. Glen says it's hard digging but from what I've seen it is sooo worth it. Our first day down at Glass Butte we hopefully we collected a few nice pieces of the fire, but won't know for sure until we get them cleaned up a bit more. David got to the point that he was tossing nearly every piece into the bucket so we'll see. lol. It seems the fire is the hardest to actually find, rare you might say....at least I do. :) The next day Glen stuck with the fire cause he seemed to have found a nice pocket and we drove all around and collected other materials such as gold sheen mahogany, flame, lace, rainbow, and few other varieties of sheen. Can't wait to start working with them and seeing what we actually came away with. I personally think we did really well, I'm certainly pleased and David is already getting oohs and ahhs from the single piece he took into to work for our computer display. Just wait until we bring in some other samples. While there we also met another gentleman fairly new to rockhounding so of course I had to tell him about this wiki and all the great people here. I hope to see him on here sometime in the near future. Livy 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Hey Livy, nice report. It will be great to see the piics of the finds. I can see Dave filling up buckets of the black stuff. lol Unless you put a hammer oops rock whacker to it, you really can't tell what you have even after cleaning in some cases. And we know how some people feel about whackers and whackin' rocks around here. lol We will be in OR at the end of June. Is there any obsidian near Redmond? I just got the urge to do a little whackin' with my whackers. LOL I need to start researching the area for potential digging sites as our time will be limited. Did you guys check out the ODOT dump site either on the way down or back? I wonder if it is worth a stop to check out. Anyway, pics, we need pics. lol ;-) Paul Do you find this valuable? |

And of course when you start a whackin you start hearing a lot of oohs and aahs.lolWe'll try to get some pics taken in the next couple of days but no guarantees. We both have to work and we're trying to get the camper ready for this weekend. Dave is going to reseal the entire thing tomorrow and I gotta get all the cushions back in their covers and wipe everything down and then we gotta repack it. The winter wasn't to kind to it and the summer is rapidly approaching. But I will try to take a break and get a few pics for all you guys. You're never going to believe this. David is now bartering with our local hardware store with our rocks that we've collected and the owner is the one who started it. He's wanting to put them on display and who knows what else. Got dog food today. Dave had the money, but the owner wanted the rocks. You gotta love living in a really small town. We didn't stop by the ODOT place, took the windy @rs road 395. Don't know how the pickins would be, depends if they have brought in any new material. As for Redmond, I don't know, will have to check. Well it's late for me so I gotta jet. We'll get some pics posted soon...I hope. :-) Livy Do you find this valuable? |

Sorry this is kind of late to be posting. I upload 10 pictures in the Gallery last night of some rough material I collected on my trip. Met up with Livy and David on saturday at glass butte. Dug with them on saturday and stayed at that area on sunday and Monday also. Got some nice stuff, but really will not know for sure how good it is until I start working it.It was really nice meeting Livy and David a great couple who are really into the rock hunting hobby. I left glass butte on tuesday late morning and drove down to Lakeview. Stayed in a motel to get cleaned up and headed down to Lassen creek wednesday morning. Met a few people at the camp site and took them up to the Electric Blue area for some digging. Did a few test holes and settled for one that someone esle had really under cut bad. Took about a hour and half to get it squared up and ready to start digging. I was getting about 50% color, which is the best I have every done there. Usually it is one in 10 or 15 stones that will have color. The next day same hole different people on eighter side of me. I helped them more than doing any digging myself, but still came up with a few 5 gal buckets worth. On Saturday had 15 or 20 people there so did no digging myself, just helping other where I could, loaning tools, subbing rocks and looking for color, showing how to best dig and get the material out. End of the day I wound up giving away 3/4 of the stuff I had dig because others did not find any Blue or had kind of poor stuff. lots of green was showing up very little blue. Although the green can be nice also on it's own. Any way had a great time and met alot of wonderful people. The rendezous had probably 50 or 60 people there. Hard to tell because they where coming and going all the time. When I get some of the material worked up I will post the photo's Glen Do you find this valuable? |
