New Mexico Rock Hunting Sites
Mar 27 2009, 1:12 PM EDT | Post edited: Mar 27 2009, 1:12 PM EDT
My family and I are heading to Albuquerque in late June to visit some friends. We would really appreciate any info on rock hunting sites within an hour or so of that area. While she's visiting, I'm planning on going out for some hunting fun. I already have a "Gems and Mineral Trails" book for that area, but was hoping for some local advice as well.
Thanks again, Joebit

Hey Joe, just went through there a little over a week ago but didn't stop except for gas ha. Albuquerque has some good agate jasper and petrified wood which is plentyful I hear in an area just south of there near Lou Lunes their wood there they say is browns, dark maroon, or gray some with reds in them. Also I read somewhere that there is good areas on the West Mesa which is right on the edge of town that has moss agate and pet wood also. Well New Mexico is called the "Land of Enchantment" you can always go just North of there where the largest volcanic crater in the world is located and check that out. I think it will be fun for you guys DB

The "local" collecting area is located in the world famous Hansonburg Mining District, which is also known as the Blanchard Claims. This district is considered one of the "richest" when it comes to the variety of mineral species it produces, which is over 80 different ones; including Fluorite, Barite, Galena, Quartz and Smoky Quartz.
Highway 380, about 1 hour and 45 minutes south of Albuquerque, New Mexico, in Socorro County. It is halfway between San Antonio and Carrizozo at mile marker 30 on U.S. Highway 380, in the "town" of Bingham, New Mexico.

Okay Don, what are you trying to tell me? I just looked up the areas you mentioned. The search engine for "west mesa" brings up several links, including one titiled: "police find 11th body in west mesa area". LOL. Actually, it does seem like a good place to visit for the history. I'm sure I'll be checking it out.

Thats why I got out of there, I only dumped two ha. Well you were saying that you wanted something close to Albuquerque, maybe you could just go out and count sage brush or cactus not much out there on the surface. But you can always go up north and check out the crater. Keep your eyes open maybe you can solve the case and have to come back down there on a free trip for court :). Just have fun Joe your on vacation. Its going to be hard to thank about anything but Fairburns now that you have found some anyway. DB
