1- DIAMONDS in Colorado & Wyoming. Start out by visiting the Great Diamond Hoax site at Diamond Peak in northwestern Colorado. In 1871, two prospectors salted a sandstone outcrop with several pounds of diamonds, rubies & sapphires & swindled Civil war generals, two presidential candidates, a congressman and other investors. More than 100 years later, I found the site with another geologist & panned out 4 diamonds, 17 rubies and 23 garnets left by the scam artists (find the approximate location by searching for ‘Diamond Field Draw, CO on Google Earth) (see: http://GemHunter.webs.com). Next, select (CEDAR MOUNTAIN ,Wyoming on Google Earth). Butcherknife Draw is located to the northeast of Cedar Mountain and has dozens of anthills with fabulous Cape Ruby (garnet) & Cape Emerald (diopside) & diamond (http://gemstonehunter.blogspot.com/2008/12/cape-rubies-cape-emeralds-garnets.html). Some of these gems are similar to those used to salt the Great Diamond Hoax area. Finally, select VIRGINA-DALE, CO in Google Earth). This will take you right to the middle of the largest diamondiferous kimberlite district in the US and potentially one of the largest in the world. In 1960, kimberlite was accidentally discovered here, but it was not until 1975 that it was accidentally discovered by the USGS. During sample preparation, a carborundum grinding wheel was carved by tiny diamonds from a rock collected from one of the State Line kimberlites. Since then, more than 130,000 diamonds were recovered from microdiamonds to a 28.3 carat gemstone. The district has fabulous specimens of kimberlite along with gem-quality pyrope garnet (Cape Ruby) and gem-quality chromian diopside (Cape Emerald). In the last couple of years, I found another 200+ kimberlites in this region. Many appear like impact features. (see: http://discussionsondiamonds.blogspot.com). Do you find this valuable?

"Dan,Hi Aaron, Do you have a jackhammer? we could go dig it out. When I first found the site, my thought was how am I ever going to dig these gems out. SOmone with experience in blasting or a lot of time on their hands with a jackhammer is needed. Would be fun though. Dan Do you find this valuable? |

Just enough to rattle and loosen up the goodies. Ewww, just the thought makes me giddy! When is the trip? lol Paul Do you find this valuable? |

Ewww, just the thought makes me giddy! When is the trip? lolNo way on earth I would dynamite out the worlds largest gemstone. It could crack it, or split it. I like the Jackhammer idea. Of course maybe a skilled demolitionist like Bob could safely blow it out, without damaging it. LOL. Do you find this valuable? |

Just don't make them very big. A good blaster would be able to drill and load the charges in such a manner as to pick up the whole piece and set it down right where you want it. Directional charges, angled holes, it would be a work of art when done. When I worked with powder, my motto was a little was good but more was always better! lol (not really. I was very careful) But there was this time...... lol Paul Do you find this valuable? |

I estimated a couple probably weigh more than 5 million carats and who knows what is behind them . Dan Do you find this valuable? |

Dan, 5 million carats = a hair over 2200 lbs ... what would we do with it once I pop it out of the ground for ya? Be a pain to backpack. If its a decent octahedron, perhaps we could roll it to the nearest road? But what if it's a macle? lol... Seriously, Paul's right, this could be done. Depending on how weathered the surrounding rock is, the piece could be separated with non-P-wave charges, then popped out with a directional blast. I've got the boom, do you have a crane? More is better when you're mining metal ... less is more in my line of blasting. Interesting thread! Bob Do you find this valuable? |

But what if it's a macle? lol...2200 lbs, hmmm, that is a little out of my league to facet so if'n we break a few smaller pieces off I'll be happy with those to play with. lol Getting a piece that big out would be a little tough. We would probably have to take Tom along to help pack it out. a 5 million carat stone, we could probably afford to rent a Chinook to come in and air lift it out. But I want to play with the boom stuff. Can I huh?? Please!?!???? HUH?????? Really Bob I won't make the tooo big.. :-o I imagine that you are very careful as to the size of your charges. Man, too much sure could make a whole much of little fellers out of some real nice large ones. It is sure a science and art when it comes to blasting. It was always fun, until you forget a cardinal rule, and wipe your brow off hand when working with raw powder. Nitro headaches suck! lol You will only do it once. lol Well it only took me once to learn. Bob, you don’t use nitro based dynamite do you. As I recall You were making your own with like Anflo or something like that. Lets do it! That would be one big rock for sure! Paul Do you find this valuable? |

Shucks, Paul, if we're gonna rent a Chinook, surely you can upgrade to a larger faceting machine ;~)) No worries about the powder, nitro-based is pretty much a thing of the past. Gumster noticed that the anfo charges we made with morning coffee hurt like the dickens when they get into a fresh cut. Days without fresh cuts are rare at Spruce. Just a few federal forms to fill out nowadays before I can let ya 'play' with the powder.Bob Do you find this valuable? |

I quit renewing my license in the 80's. So maybe getting a new one shouldn't be hard. Making booms is fun. lol I did use many different types of explosives depending on the situation. The nitro based stuff we used when we were crevassing rock. Unwrap the stuff and pack it into rock crevices. A lot in basalt, talk about hard rock! It was fun, but I tell you only wipe your head once with your glove on and it was immediate headache. Heck man, I wonder how big a faceting machine I should get? I figure 5 foot laps may be large enough. Couple horse motor, crane and a very large dop stick. Yeah man no problem. lol Chinook, faceting machine, hmm what else do we need? I do remember those nitro headaches, nasty! Turned my skin a greenish color, as well. Mostly got those on underground jobs w/ poor ventilation, like mining ametrine in Bolivia. Seems anfo is worse in cuts than salt, or maybe that's just cause anfo is more frequent for me, lol. If you've had a license before, should be no problem to become a Responsible Person person today ... the feds language is entertaining. Now we just need Dan on board.Bob Do you find this valuable? |

I think we are making him nervous. lol I was lucky and only had to visit working faces underground never having to work there for extended periods of time. Always poor ventilation, diesel fumes, explosive residue, always bugged me. Paul Do you find this valuable? |
