Paulina site...
Apr 25 2009, 3:09 PM EDT
We took a trip over to one of the Paulina sites to look for limb casts. We took the first suggested road, at milepost 44, Camp Creek Road along Highway 380 (Paulina Highway). We drove the nine miles up, suggested by my book "Gem Trails of Oregon" and even my BLM map shows this site (newer map). The BLM map says you will see a small gravel pit, and to just drive past it on the unpaved road it is on. Well, at the entrance of this little road to the site, there is a large had made sign that says "Private property NO trespassing, trespassers will be prosecuted to the FULLEST extent of the law possible". The bold letters are theirs. There is a gate blocking access to this road, although I believe that it is a BLM road. We had a couple of disappointed kids, but proceeded to make an attempt to find another spot, not too far away ,as our day was dwindling by that time. We stopped at the bridge over the creek, and above that was a steep hillside, covered in a "slide" of basalt. In that basalt, we found some agate, browns and reds. Some of it was just to dangerous to try to get on the severely steep slope of pure loose rocks though, but the red was VERY red and solid large chunks. I'll have a picture up soon. Now we did not go to the Congleton Road site (the second in the book and on the BLM map), so we do not know the status of that site. It was much further down than we wanted to drive (some more with kids itching to get out and find something). Anyone up on it can try it and let us all know. We might try it sometime in the future. I'd recommend the Congleton Hollow site. I made several trips there last summer, into fall, and there's still plenty of nice limb cast material to be found. Also, quite a bit of pet wood there too. If you find little pieces congregated on the ground, just dig slightly uphill from them.Good luck, Dan Do you find this valuable? |

Rockmom- I was at this site last year and I remember the road you are talking about. The road in to the limb cast area is just past it, maybe a quarter mile, and is easy to miss. There is an information board a little ways in on the BLM road. I'm really sorry that you and your kids were disappointed. I would second debaker's suggestion about Congleton Hollow, also the road in is much better. I'm going to Hampton Butte this upcoming weekend, I'll check the status of that site off Camp Creek Rd.

Won't tell the kids we did not go far enough. We went by what the BLM map said too and it described it as being on the same road as the gravel pit, and to just bypass it, going further up. So this is why we did not go more up the main road, we simply turned around and found the agate site, then went onto Antelope (just to see it, I had not been up there since I was about 12!).It might be a while before we get out again. Son is working weekends and my husband during the week, and it is tough for him to take time off during the week. But when we do I plan for it to be 100% guaranteed this time, so I will check with everyone here first for exact directions and ideas of what is good. Do you find this valuable? |

Went down there this weekend, lots of rain and mud. The road into the Dendrite Butte area is still open, it is 0.2 mile past the road into the quarry. There is a sign on a tree, says "Cold Creek Ranch, No Trespassing, through to BLM OK".

Where is this site? Sounds like Oregon. Have you contacted BLM regional regarding access, singage sounds confusing.Aman Do you find this valuable? |

It is Oregon, off of Highway 380, in the Crooked River area, near the Maury Mountains (Ochocco National Forest). jtelescope suggested I we should have gone further down, as there was another road which was the one we wanted.....well, we'll do that next time. So it may have well been a private area, and they put up a sign due to being tired of people mistakenly coming onto their property for rock hounding.

I'm heading down to this area and Hampton Butte over Memorial Day weekend. If anyone is interested I'd be glad to show them around.

I wish I could...just can't have two conflicting schedules of work that will overlap the long weekend, but thanks and good luck.
