Wish me luck!

Well, my wife and I are headed out the door to do some rock-hounding on Hwy-37 here in Indiana. There are some wonderful road cuts exposing limestone, dolomite and sandstone with plenty and vugs and lots of crystals, and hopefully fossil is the sandstone. I'l' bring back plenty of photos.

"Eric,

I don't know yet, Pam. We got over a couple of dozen specimens. I've only cleaned up about a dozen--had to use a toothbrush on some of them, and only have had time to analyze only two specimens so far! LOL The rest have red clay all over them and still have to be cleaned. Found a specimen of fossiliferous limestone which I posted and a calcite, dolomite, iron oxide crystalline specimen with small granular crystals. Unfortunately, I'm not having much luck photographing it. The specimen is pretty large, but the crystals are small--about 1-2 mm. You can easily see the crystals with the unaided eye. But our camera isn't designed to take close-up, detailed shots like that. I took over a dozen photos of the sucker, and I'm not happy with a single one of them. It's probably going to take me a week to sort through all of this stuff, get it photographed, analyzed and classified. And I'm also kind of exhausted from all that climbing, hiking and whacking rocks with my 3 lb. hammer! LOL

Whackers are us! Wackos have canceled their membership, LOL. Nice job with the 3 pounder, Eric; and looks like no danger to anything cuttable. Careful with the brush if you think there might be millerite ... those hairs fall off way too easily.

For those mineral grains, got a scanner? Surprisingly sharp mineral photos can be taken on a flatbed scanner. For big rocks, just crop out the part that is out of focus.

I wish I did, Bob. My wife and I are hoping that eventually we can afford a nice Canon Rebel DSLR camera along with a macro lens. In the mean time, I'm trying to come up with something that I can put together on the cheap using essentially a large magnifying glass. But first we have got to get all of these specimen cleaned up. Don't worry, Bob about the millerite. The initial cleaning is done very gently with just water and our fingers tips. Then after the specimens have dried and we're able to get a better look at what we have, then I decide whether or not it's safe to use a toothbrush for a deeper cleaning or at least on which part of a specimen it is safe to use a toothbrush. ;-) Whackers are us, indeed! I really did have fun using the 3 lb hammer. And it really does do the job on those thicker rocks! LOL Sorry, Tom. ;-) But the G-pick came in handy too. I used both hammers about an equal number of times while we were out there. And I wouldn't leave home without both of them with me! ;-)

"Eric,

Well, I'm sorry to have to report that of all the specimens that we found in which millerite would most likely have been found, there was no trace of the Nickel Sulfide. There are about a dozen specimens left to clean, but even without cleaning, I can tell that these are not specimens where millerite would mostly occur. The two best candidates that we have in which millerite would most likely occur did not have any trace of the mineral, and I examine the specimens before cleaning with water. One of them was the one which I said earlier that I wasn't have much luck photographing. Even without cleaning, I could have told you whether or not there were the slender capillary millerite crystals present in the specimens. But two thirds of the specimens still had not been unpacked yet at that time. Maybe next time, Pam. ;-)
