Just wanted to let my fellow Washingtonians know that the Hansen Creek road (FS 55) is closed for repairs. Closure order link: http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/mbs/conditions/road-closures.shtml#tinkham

Yes, Thanks Bob. I have been wondering about Hansen Creek. Although, sorta funny it seems the main reason the road is closed is because they don't want people stealing the exposed fiber optic equipment. Although, I am more to the idea that a huge giant gold vein was opened up, or giant crystal vug opened up and covered the road, and the surrounding and they want to collect the treasure before they reopen to the public (j/k);) Although looks like a person could ride a mountain bike up the hansen creek. 2 1/2 miles from exit 47, and and all downhill on the way back except the .5 miles of riding on Tinkham would be a minor uphill ride. On a positive note one could collect undisturbed. Tehe.

LOL, if I recall it was a fairly steep hill parts of the way up. That said I'm game here on one of the upcoming weekends.

Thanks,

Would you take a huge lung full of tremolite for a nice rock?

rockhound crazy has a whole different scale than other types of crazy ... dangling from a rope over a cliff to find a rock counts as just slightly crazy on the 'hound scale. Dangling from a moving helicopter to get to the cliff, while fending off tree branches with a pole ... that gets the crazy-meter ticking. BTW, tremolite is related to asbestos ... but only crazy jade hunters have to deal with that, lol

Yes, I was trying to figure out what it was that made it painful breathing all week, and gave me a dry cough and wheezing. TUrns out Chrysotile contrary to what they say is not such a hazardous asbestos due to its size and flexibility, it has elasticity properties. I was reading a study on asbestos and miners, and it turns out the miners that died and developed lung cancer had been exposed to not only chrysotile, but they had 4 times the amount of tremolite in their lungs. Turns out Tremolite fibers are like hard little microblades that embed themselves into your lungs, and can get stuck whereas chrysotile asbestos usually works its way out and usually doesn't get past your neck. I was pulling rocks out of a cliff face with alot of dust even though I had my mouth in my tshirt that didnt help much, next time I climb up there I will not forget my asbestos filter.

I am strongly considering checking out dead rockhounds area this weekend for those garnets you mentioned a couple of months back.

Thanks,

Aaron

Yeah, but what about silicosis? Seems to me cutting agates is just as dangerous considering the false sense of security cutting such a "safe" stone might give. Crazy Jade Hunters can't help but be aware of the risks. Which leads me to a question, what kind of masks are best?

Be real careful there this time of year, aaron, that recent warm spell will have melted out ice caves under the surface of the gulch. Don't want to lose another wiki poster! lol.

Breathing any foreign substance can get ya, but since agates are cut wet, I doubt silicosis is much of a risk for hobbiests.. I got copper poisoning cutting turq & malachite commercially in the 80's, wore a good mask, but learned metals can also be absorbed thru the skin. Another career bit the dust! lol.

Best masks are ratedby msha & osha. AOsafety and MSA are good brands, they take cannisters which filter specific dusts. Gemplers.com has a good selection.

The gulch is an avalanche chute, usually holds snow until July. Do you find this valuable?

Thanks Bob,

I went looking for it today to no avail. Hiked about a mile in past the Freeway on the Denny Creek Trail. The bridge is washed out at the Waterslide (Is it jut named that or do people actually slide down it?)

Went to Hansen Creek as well, Tinkham Road is open from Exit 47, and we drive to the upper and lower portions of Hansen Creek area, both were completely clear of snow. Ironically we did encounter snow on the other side of the freeway on the Denny Creek Trail. I've got those garnets on my mind and now I don't know where to find them. Just curious if you could ad hoc guess the actual spot where the garnets are on Maps.google.com to obtain a gps coorinate? The only orange, or rust colored slide area I could find was the area right above I-90 on the EastBound side about 1 to 2 miles before the summit.

No, I didn't even get out of the car there. I was just GPS Mapping it because I have heard alot of people talk about an area they wish they could get to and I have a fairly easy way to get to it if I know where in the woods to cut through and hike up. Hmmm, I have a dentist appointment after 4PM on Saturday afternoon/evening however, earlier nothing (maybe I could get out of the dentist this weekend;) not big on going to the dentist, and getting fillings.). Sunday, I need to go up to Darrington area for some stones there.

Thanks,

Aaron

Well I am sure that you will be going Jake. Cause if'n it is a 150° that means hell is around and well rockin' just may not be the top priority. lol Great to see you back here. It has been a long time. Grant to see ya dude. Have a safe, successful and fun trip tomorrow.
