opal fossicking in Australia
Jun 15 2009, 5:47 PM EDT
just got back from Lightning Ridge. Unfortunately i hit a kangaroo in the middle of the night. Poor thing, but these creatures are so unpredictable. The just jump out in front of you from behind a bush. there's not way you can miss them at times. Sad. Spent some time at the Grawin mines. There's a mountain of opal 'mullock' up there [tailings] for fossickers. Some really expensive black opals have been found there if you have a small pic and shovel, a bucket of water, and a lot of patience. Bought and sold a few parcels of opal rough. Rubbed down a small parcel of black opals but must have left them in the pocket of my leather jacket which i have lost somewhere. so that was $1000 down the drain. Opal cutting is an exciting procedure. Some stuff about it at opal-experts.com and www.opalmine.com Best wishes to all precious stone searchers. Peter

I've enjoyed your posts to the opal blog; you'll find lots of fellow gem hunters here. Tho not me, I'm a crystal fossicker ... one of my favorite places in the world is Mooralla, on your side of the pond. Sorry to hear you met a grasshopper on your midnite ride. A banana-bender friend of mine laid himself out for awhile when a wallaby jumped in front of his motorbike. Cute little buggers, but ya never know when they'll bounce. Had one jump down a hole with me a couple years ago, had to wait for him to get tired before I could help him out. Too bad about that rubbed parcel you misplaced, but imagine how delighted the bloke or shiela who finds it wll be! That's the thing about luck, no predicting which way it will turn ... kinda like roos on the road. Sounds like you've had your share of good luck. Me too, and that's what I think about when the bad luck hits. Gee, I'm gettin all philosophical, just like sitting around a campfire in the Grampians, tipping back some tinnies with me mates. Ooroo. Spent some time there (Western Australia) hunting diamonds and gold. Really enjoyed my time there - but couldn't figure out how to make a right (or was it left) turn in traffic in Perth. Also worked for a couple of Aussie companies - one in the diamond business - the other base metals. So do you live there or are you just visiting? Dan Do you find this valuable? |

"Hi Peter, well done Bob! good council. compare your good fortune with a few downers. there's enough poor blighters on this planet who dont even have a feed and a place to call home. we're a spoilt bunch in Australia. I guess all we can do is do something for someone else and help as much as we can. Anyway it looks like my old mate at the Ridge has just hit a big parcel of opal. been on the blower this morning to my contact in the UK. They will probably fly out to have a look. best wishes mate. Bob"Man this is great. All this spoilt talk and all. I must be one of the spoilt guy around if'n I get the correct meaning . lol Bob when that wallaby jumped into that hole with you, how beat up did you get while the little fella tried himself out. I can imagine it's shock to first fall into a hole and then secondly be greeted by another living creature who probably reacted in a rather "wholly s***" mode.... lol I can just imagine the sight lol Peter it is too bad about the loss of the coat and parcel of opals. Like Bob stated just think of the good surprise and fortune you brought into someones life. Or just think that that coat may be laying there waiting for your top pick it back up. :-) Opals are so cool! That would be a tough loss to accept. With this bloke, shiela, mate tippin' tinniess and talk about the roo's and wallabies I guess the best way to end this is to say I am looking forward to some pics of opals and adventures and may the rockin' always favour the finder. g-day! :-) Paul Do you find this valuable? |

Doesn't matter if you put your photos in an album, that just makes it easier for someone to eyeball all your stuff. We use ;~)) (wink) or lol (laugh out loud) instead of smileys, if I follow your drift correctly. Love that cartwheel red cab! Thanks for posting pix. How'd your parcel go? I've only dug opal at Mintabe, where I got hooked on that beautiful black. Bob Do you find this valuable? |

Didn't notice it until I was halfway down the ladder, when something jumped. About jumped out of my socks! She proceeded to bounce around the 10 X 10 ft. hole like it was a racecourse. I went back to camp and got a gunny sack. Every time I moved, she started racing again, but slower every rev, until finally she just sat still and I bagged her. Still was a squirmy load to carry up a ladder, guess she weighed about 10 lbs. When i let go the bag, she sat still for a moment, cocking her ears like they do, then bounced off like her tail was alight! Like you, I've been chastized a bit for not having gotten my camera, lol. Manuel the Greek was there then. i dont think there's much going on there nowadays. its easier to get to Lightning Ridge and you can at least go down for a meal at the club there. not so isolated. "I met a bunch of Greeks at a motorcana at Mintabee. One Greek had a big bulldozer mine, I got invited to look at his level, (walk into a pub in a mining town and mention you're a geologist, and you get invites, LOL!) and they just happened to hit a bonza seam that day. Wild time. Bloke named Sarge had a great patch going, crystal and black, a little north of what they called the American Mine. Peter Blythe was doing well in a bobcat mine, but bumping up against the end of the area, and the Pitanjarra bunch wouldn't expand their lease to the miners, so looked like the field was dying other than sarge and Peter's and the Greek's strikes. I hope to get to the Ridge one of these days, but spend most of my time in Oz between the Murray and the Grampians. Bob Do you find this valuable? |

that would have been the same Manuel i knew. the most successful miner in that area. i went down his mine too and watched him exposing some seam opal. I must do some more stories of the south australian mines. Andamooka, and White Cliffs which of course is across the border into NSW, not far from Broken Hill. I'm going to do a story of the Plessy skeleton they found there and add it to the material already in my blog. www.opal-experts.com If you go to www.ezinearticles.com and type in peter brusaschi you can read some more stories. i have a couple of videos from the Ridge as well. can you post videos in this forum? They are installed at www.opalmine.com but i will try to put them here to make them more accessible. peter

That skeleton is Amazing! Is it still in the tourist opal shop in Sydney? I'd heard the owners wanted to export it, but the Oz govt. would'nt allow it. Onya! Also heard that short-lived opal museum in Canberra had something to do with it ... but don't know the whole story. Look forward to readin your piece about that, but will be in Oct., as I'm off mining for the summer. Nice yakkin with ya, Peter!Bob Do you find this valuable? |
