Hey Aaron, they have some very nice jade in California too, I have several pieces of nice green nephrite, collected not far from where Kirsten was diving for jade. Inland from that place there are tons of the stuff. Problem is, most of that area is now posted private property. Also lots of jade to be found in and around the old gold fields in Cal.

Hi Tim, Hi Sharon. The stuff from Washington can't compare to what can be found in Wyoming. I'm planning a trip next year to Wyoming just for the jade there. That said, the variety that can be found here is pretty amazing. Your best bet is to hit Deer Creek at Oso, and now is the time. I'm sure either Aaron or I could show you the best access points if you want, but its fairly easy hunting. I'm pretty much always available.

I love Jade Don. Fortunately, the Forest Company Claim is a buddy and I's claim so your all welcome;) Sucks about that area on the show. I did a little reading about it and I was disappointed when I read just how limited the collecting area is. Most of it is untouchable. Thats one reason why I think we are blessed here in Washington to have alot of National Forest Jade Locales to hunt in. Very few people actually know how huge an area it can be collected in. Its a huge area, although the sources are pretty isolated and if people know where the sources are they don't speak about them. I can count the people here with Jade fever who know more then just the casual rockhound on 2 hands. Ironically, most got there fever from a guy who taught them about Jade who has been hunting Jade since about 1963. As of late my main fixes are Nephrite, Garnet, and Jadeite hunting. I love Chromium Jade. I suspect we have a source of it here in Washington.

Thanks,

Aaron

There are Jade collecting sites dotted all over the The central range of California. Most of them on forest service land, and open to collectors, as long as the collecting isn't for commercial purposes. Most sites are in northern Cal., but there are a few in southern Cal. too.

There's also jade in Oregon on the Pistol River, but I don't have enough to comment on the overall quality.

I really don't know the difference between Jadeite and Nephrite. I've always been an agate and jasper sort of guy. It's possible that what I have is Jadeite. Why don't you start a page, describing the difference between the two ? I'm sure there are many of us who can't tell the difference. I think it would be a great addition to the discussion. I guess that I'm fortunate. The Jade I have was collected while on a summer vacation with my parents, back in the 50"s, before all of that land was closed.

Short of a specific gravity test, there isn't any way to tell the two apart, unless you know that where you found it only has the one variety. But of course they are often found in the same localities. I believe there are certain colors that are only found with jadeite, but that isn't a very good diagnostic tool. The page for jade already exists, its just empty of all content. Thats because all of us crazy jade hunters are too busy looking for jade and showing off our rocks. I keep promising myself I'll do something about it, but never do. Maybe once the weather turns sour this winter!

A Spectroscopy test can tell the two apart, under microscope one is fiborous while Jadeite is crystal, also Jadeite burns a different color under heat. Do you find this valuable?

LOL, apart from that, Jadeite can be hundreds to thousands of times more expensive.
