Turquoise Info from a Turquoise Miner, Cutter and Jewelr
Aug 4 2009, 4:58 PM EDT | Post edited: Aug 4 2009, 4:58 PM EDT
Hello all,
We (http://www.durangosilver.com) have been in the business since the 60s and have specialized in American Turquoise. We are partners in several Turquoise mines in Nevada. We also mine Highgrade Silver Ore out of Silverton, Colorado.

I have added a lot of information to this page about turquoise. I have building an online turquoise museum for 8+ years now. Many, many people have stole my information and added it to their site. I do not care as I put it out there for the public to learn and be better educated.

I hope all enjoy what I have contributed.

Hi Dillon, Welcome aboard. I was always told that the day when you didn't learn something new was a wasted day. Have you ever tried some of the old copper mines in Southern California? I haven't been there for about 13 years, but still have a small supply of very nice Turquoise.

Hello Dillon & Company. Welcome aboard. It's nice to have folks on here that know about Turquoise. I think it's beautiful. Keep the info coming and more pics as you get them. It's always good to learn about new things. Have a nice day.

welcome to the wiki, and thanks for the great info, got one question do you know of any mines that allow people to go through the tailings, if some one was in the area that would be a neat thing to do. Do you find this valuable?

Hello,
I just know of the Royston Turquoise Mine in Tonopah, NV that actually allows people to go to the mine and dig in the railings. I also know if you are careful to check with the locals about who owns the old mines around... if anyone... you can find mines that have been abandoned and you may be able to find a few scraps. Also, I know that in Madrid, New Mexico outside of Santa Fe... that is the closest town to the old Cerrillos mines... there is a couple down there that is mining variscite out... and there is another gentleman named Tim O/ Neil who is down there in Santa Fe who owns claims on Cerrillos.. his site is www.tuffnuttraders.com ... I don't know if this is helpful... but those folks might let you come out with them or at least sell you some rough.

If in California, you might try the old Toltec mine. It's located north of U.S, interstate 15, just shy of 12 miles east of the town of Baker, San Bernardino Co. Take the Halloran Springs exit, and head north on a good dirt road for about 8 miles. From the parking area, it's about a 3/4 mile hike to the mine.
This is located in the Turquoise Mtns, (Sometimes known as the Halloran Hills). I haven't been there for a number of years, but small pieces of robins egg blue turquoise was plentyful in the mine tailings. And with a little hard rock mining, there were larger pieces to be had. For better directions to the mine, I'd suggest picking up a copy of Desert Gem Trails.

Say Dillon , when I was down in New Mexico in Las Cruses in the early 90's I had been told that most all of our American Turquoise mines were foreign owned. Any idea if that is true?

It is so nice to find someone who will share their knowledge wwith those of us who have not had the time to get off work and learn on our own. I have read a little about Turquoise but need to learn more as i am retired now and have time to go look and dig but not too much as Gas just kills our best plans.
Do you know where we might buy some good hard rough. or trade for old stock Deer Creek Fire Agates. Thanks for any news we will be moving out to a western stare next spring, Leon & Suzanne in Del Rio. Texas. we sell some of my work on e bay, at Hughes gems and minerals. even though we have sold most all of our old minerals. Thamks again.
