Hey I'm new to this but would like to plan something for the weekend of August 29 & 30th. I have a 5 year old so it couldn't be too trecherous. Does anyone have any suggestions or would anyone like to meet up and go with us somewhere? Do you find this valuable?

You might want to put where you are at. We can't say we want to do a trip when we don't know where you are. LOL Welcome to the site and hope you enjoy it.

After thinking about it, if you went to the confluence of Pilchuck and Bear creek you could sift the gravels for jade. It's a really nice spot, and about as kid friendly as a creek site can be. It's only about an hour away I think.

i should be free, i have a ten year old to help out. Maybe Aaron can convince his wife to come out too with his girls. Sifting for the jade is easy and it's suppose to increase the chance of finding higher quality pieces. I took my sister and her girls up there and they had a blast. I'll get a link to the directions for you either way.

you want to park right before the road crosses Bear creek, then just walk down to the creek. you can camp there too if you really wanted to. you'll want to bring a large mesh screen, shovel, spray bottle and bucket. Do you find this valuable?

Man I wished I lived closer. Sounds like a fun outing. How are the bugs? Would some bug spray be added to the tool list? Them moss'skeeters can sure ruin what could have been a great day.

Yeah, if you like to put Deet all over yourself it wouldn't be a bad idea, though you could survive without I think. it's not a marshy area, so the bug level is normal for Washington. I always have the bug repellant wipes with me because my son has had sever allergic reactions to mosquitos bites in the past. it has something to do with having the sickle cell trait. i still have to figure out what days my wife has off and weather she wants to. i bet if it's hot we'll be there for sure. we found a really great swimming hole down the creek, but it's a bushwhack or short hike down the creek bed. I'm not sure if that would be a good idea with a five year old. there's a swimming hole there anyway.

I don't think the Mosquitos are very bad around there. At least not this time of year, the bugs were pretty bad in the Spring but now they are just fine.

Yeah, i was out there today and didn't have it too bad. i looked for your stick Aaron, but it's gone. I did find another botryoidal just like the one my son found. After hiking up about half a mile or so, I sat down and said "Alright, we'll stop here." And right where I sat, just a I sat I found it. We both started laughing cause I hadn't found anything of note the whole way up.

Well, I am ready for this weekend, to go back and find what was left behind;) been planning the how, and I also found an awesome specimin that I think is a Jade stone we completely ignored all over up there:) I have the equipment pretty well thought out. Per the actual thread Cynthia, I have an almost 5 yo and a 5 yo, and both could handle sifting though gravels like Zeke suggests, however, thats the most I would suggest in regards to what we do. If I ever bring them anywhere near the creek I make them wear life jackets.

Thanks,

Aaron

I know what you mean about the jade we didn't notice. the weathering on that creek is frustrating. Once i got home a lot of the "maybes" turned out to be "yeses"...but the quality is hard to tell without cutting into them. the material that makes up that one ?botryoidal jade you gave me is the same material as another one I already have, but it's small enough that i can cut it on the trim saw to find out what it's really made of, so I'll do that tomorrow so we know weather we are wasting our time and backs collecting it or not. I'll bring it and the bonanza jade as well as a representative collection of all the jades i've found on that creek for Cynthia to look at so she'll have an idea of what to look for. Also, i figured out what to call the jades peeking out of the rocks that i was hesitant to call botryoidal...lenses. It's the jade that you find when sifting, but not weathered out of the serpentinite host rock. i found a piece that illustrates this perfectly the other day. there's still a whole lot of pretenders on that creek though...really good pretenders.
