Need help identifying a Dinosaur Tooth
Sep 8 2009, 11:24 PM EDT | Post edited: Sep 8 2009, 11:24 PM EDT
This Labor Day, I went out to my favorite fossil hunting spot with my kids and their friends. It turned out to be a very exciting day! First I found my very first megalodon tooth. It is roughly 5 to 6 inches and in perfect condition. In addition, we found a strange tooth that we cant seem to identify. In the field, as I was tired and wet and muddy, I passed it off as perhaps whale and tossed it in the bucket. After a night's sleep and a shower it seems I am stumped. My latest guess is perhaps some kind of prehistoric crocodile? The root is what is particularly striking about this tooth. I have pictures posted on my profile page which I dont know if I can display in this thread as well. Do you find this valuable?

Hi Robyn. I don't know if we have any fossil experts on the wiki. Your best bet to ID that thing might be a museum or college with a paleontology program.
I posted a dino tooth a couple of months ago, and so far there have been no guesses on what type it was. I had someone here in town tell me that it was some sort of dino claw, but I know that isn't right, Part of the jaw bone is still attached, and there's a socket where another tooth would have been.

Hi Robyn,
I have a site that might help you ,but not sure of the address.I will look into it and post it when I find the address. The fossils are from Florida, but might help as it seems like they have some of the same teeth. Hope it helps Tim my other half thinks it is a Whale tooth ,he is better at the Fossils than I am.

THANKS! I will be researching the website next! Also wanted to pass along 2 things:

There is a potash mine in Aurora, NC that has an open day every year in October I think. It is famous for it's abundance of megalodon teeth and other excellent fossils. You have to sign up in advance and I think you must be at least 18 years old. I will post a good link in the next couple hours.

Also, I will try to recruit a paleontology club or something (if I find one while trying to ID my tooth) to join the wiki to help us with fossil id if you think that would be useful.
Thanks again all,
Robyn

Hey Robyn, A paleontology club would be a great addition to this site. Hope you can get them interested in joining us. Good luck with the ID on your finds. That Meg tooth is a great and valuable find.

Mystery solved! It is a tooth from an extinct SAW FISH. I submitted pictures of it to a website called FossilWeb for analysis. Here's link:

http://bassexpert.com/fossil/index.htm

The website is excellent - it has a feature where you can submit pictures for identification; only requires you select a username and password.

I also found a website that had almost the exact same tooth pictured in one of their articles: http://fossilsofnj.com/skates_rays/sawfish.htm

I phoned the Potash mine in Aurora, NC and unfortunately they will NOT have an open fossil dig this fall like they do every year because they are doing a big project with the State and will have heavy equipment running round the clock through that part of mine this fall. But they said they will have the open dig in the Spring and to check back in January for the exact dates. When I get them I will post them here for anyone who wants to go.

A good website for information about the Aurora, NC / Lee Creek Mine go here:

Hey Robyn, It's great that you got that tooth identified so quickly. I'll check out those websites, and will probably add at least one to my bookmarks. Thanks for the great info.

You would think with all these ole fossils on here they could come up with something! With rocks, I would just say Jasper maybe. Bill can't you come up with an answer for Robyn? I will have to drag out some of my teeth not the ones in my mouth either! The ones I have have the jagged edges and are about 2" long. Found on PVT. property of course.
