Mineral Council Project
Oct 21 2009, 2:52 AM EDT | Post edited: Oct 21 2009, 2:52 AM EDT
i have been appointed by the Washington State Mineral Council to act as their representative to determine what actions the Council can take to retain access to private lands in Washington.

Specifically this includes three current problem areas: Lucas Creek, Adna and Studebaker Creek.

In our efforts we should all strive to make this an example for other problem areas.

Objectives are coalescing along several lines:

To draft code of conduct building upon the rockhounders code of ethics that incorporates the concerns of all constituencies. To seek official endorsment of this statement by the regulatory authorities.

To determine private land mineral rights owners and managment entity concerns for each site in question and offer specific constructive solutions. Club or Council sponsership of sites, private joint ventures and small stream restoration projects are all possibilites.

To establish increased credibility for clubs and club members. We need very good PR to help reverse the increasing pace of closures and regulatory restrictions. This is an exceptional challenge in the face of the greed exhibited by the plunderers who reside almost exclusively outside of our community.

Please contrbute your suggestions to this thread. There are a lot of potential tasks that will contribute to these objectives. I will put the objectives and tasks together as the ideas converge.

Regardless, contacting Weyerhauser is on the critical path. To respect their privacy, please send me suggested contact indivduals by private message. And if anyone knows the underlying mineral rights ownership for these tree farms, please post that info.

Me, I need some sleep...

It is good to see people coming together working towards a common goal for the common good. I hope everything works out well for all parties concerned.

"Bravo! Count me in!"
Most clubs in Washington are members of the mineral council. If you are a member of a club you are also a member of the council. Only appointed representatives are voting members, but the meetings are open to all and the perfect venue to address many of these issues. Anyone who wants to take the initiative to lead a program or project or volunteer only need attend.

There are also some great projects for the Pajamahudeen. You don't really need to get out of your slippers in the morning to be a formidable force by focusing the power of communications offered by wikis such as this. In the modern age diffiult situations are increasingly dealt with by self-organizing networks of the consituents that cut accross administrative and beauracratic boundaries. There are no "leaders" in such networks in the traditional sense. Catalysts would be a more appropriate description, I suppose, but each role is as unique as the indivuals abiliy to contribute.

So... may the force be with you (sarcastic pun intended).

No clubs in my area. I'm just a lonely rockhound stuck in a houndless area. I'd have to travel about 3 hours to attend meetings at the nearest club. In the winter, that's not always possible in S.D.

Gotcha. As I found out at the Mineral Council meeting when you have a problem to deal with you get the job.

So take what you learned here from the flash mob effect after the Lucas slide and apply it to the restoration project. Create a venue here for potential stream restoration volunteers and for club members to solicit volunteers. The size of the list and skill sets is important as it indicates will indicate broad support and concern.

A stream restoration volunteer brigade organized under the auspices of the Mineral Council would contribute to all of our objectives. I understand a couple of landowners at Lucas have lobbied for this closure. Simply contacting them for project suggestions might be a great place to start. My guess is that you could get the folk here and at the Council to help you put together a cover letter and questionaire that could be mailed out or dropped off.

If you have time in your life for this now put me on the list. My applicable skills are a Ph.D. in Fisheries Biometrics from the College of Ocean and Fisheries Sciences with 20 years of experience in salmon management and research. With just one days notice four vounteers showed up from Maplewood last night so if you do not have time or think you migh run out of gas don't worry. There will be someone there to take the hand-off.

Such a brigade would be a fitting memorial to TallTom. I am sure that his spirit will be there for us. And with dragons on our side?

Sounds like a good start towards curing the ills in Washington State. Now if we can get it going in all of the states, we have a chance at keeping rockhounding alive.

Things are shutting down everywhere. Rumor is that the historic Richardson's ranch is now closed because of vandalism and theft. The goldfish rules now in effect do not allow digging within 100 feet of any creek except for one month. And a one bucket limit appears to have been placed on the gate key purchasers for the White River tree farm. All of these rules were put in place because increasing demand. In a declining economy, there are a lot more folk out rock hunting. Most of them are not from the traditional rockhounding community, but from newcomers many of whom are looking for something to sell.

I can't say that I haven't sold a few rocks in my years of collecting, but 99% of what I've collected has been for my own use, or traded with another rockhound. I try not to bring home more than I can use in a reasonable amount of time.

I can clarify on the Richardson's Ranch since I got the Mineral Council meeting minutes today in EMail, as well as the BRC update. Richardson's is no longer allowing overnight camping at the shop.

Thanks,

Aaron

THAT is a damn crying shame. How awful! I love the folks at Richardsons, they are so honest and nice.

It's so sad that people are behaving so unrespectfully.

I wish I had time guys, I do! Keep me in the loop for weekends where you need labor or anything that can be done remotely and I'll do what I can with what I can.

I wanna send a card to Richardsons now, how terrible that they were taken advantage of. :(

I commend all the efforts that are being organized to keep this great hobby going in Washington state. I have been President of the Huntsville Gem and mineral Society and the clubs in the area went through a similar situation, When the local folks see real efforts being made to restore habitat, attitudes will change. I have experience in reclamation from my mining experience and I will offer to help in any way. Thanks for taking the lead on this effort.

If you have a paper trail of some of the more significant elements of your experience that would be most helpful.
