Hello!!! I want to talk to all of you a bit more seriously about the CASH part of Cash and Treasures...I am looking for some folks from the NW (Oregon, WA, ID, BC & No. Cal) to partner with in creating a website that features all NW rocks and minerals. The website would serve three purposes: - Capture the amazingness of the Pac NW Rockhound and their trips/happenings (blog) - Distribute rough stone for those poor suckers who can't make it out here to get their own - Showcase Pacific NW faceting, cabbing and jewelry artists My goals for the site are to: - Educate - Let's start talking about why this area is so amazing! - Showcase - Jewelry, Rocks, Display pieces, Rough, Gems!!! - Make money for the contributors - Times are tough, we could all use a little scratch in our pockets to fill the tank on our next rockhounding trip or buy that new grinding machine How the website I am creating will NOT compete with the WIKI and could potentially benefit it: - I will create a forum tab and link it to the WIKI - I wil actively market the website to those seeking lapidary rough, loose stones and Pacific NW product - I will BLOG about the wiki because I love all of you so much Who might want to partner with me: - Faceters, Cabbers and Lapidaries who are working with local rock - Rockhounds who want to make some cash from their finds - Claim owners with a steady supply of rough - Jewelry makers who use Pac NW materials I really would love for this to be a win-win-win-win venture (win for you, win for me, win for the customer and win for the wiki) so if you are interested, let me know! I would love to be able to post pictures of your pretties on the site and really help support our community here. :) If you want to link share, I am interested in this too! Do you find this valuable? |

Hi Laura,Can not believe no one has posted back to you so far. Great Idea, I have been thinking about selling some of my stuff or doing custom cabbing for people. I did work for a Jeweller in Tacoma some years ago so might get back to that. I try to get out every year to do some digging mostly centeral Oregon, Northern Califorina. So I know where to go to get different types of material. Have maps of some areas. Love to share with others who want to go digging or want information on how to do something. Keep me posted please on how you are doing getting that site set up. Glen Do you find this valuable? |

"Hi Laura,Oh wow! That would be awesome! I am glad you are interested! Right now I have created the blog and am working on the store. I am currently working on a logo. The site is www.northwestrocks.com (nothing there yet!) My launch goal for the site is September 1st. If you have contributions you can email them to me at laura.anne.joki@gmail.com. I will be happy to credit them to you and link to whatever you wish. As far as product is concerned, I want to set this up so you hold on to your rocks, keeping me updated with inventory, pictures and costs and I would have the owner of the rock, drop-ship it to the buyer. I have not figured out what my cut will be of gross sales, but just enough to share in the cost of maintenance of the site and the work to complete the transaction. I am more interested in having A LOT of pacific NW goodies on show. What are your thoughts? If you would like to contribute your maps or trip reports, the sooner the better as I am building out the blog right now for those pages. :) Cheers! Oh and pass this on to ANY pacific NW rockhounds you know! Would it be helpful for me to make a 1/4page flyer with what I am trying to do and how to get ahold of me? Skeeter - once again, thanks for being awesome! Do you find this valuable? |

It is a good idea. Though everything you mention is already on the wiki. I am just afraid that with the closures of some of the collection sites and I hear more are in the works and the wiki getting the blame for it that there maybe the same problems with another website. We have lost so many WA people, or I shouldn't say lost them, but they no longer post - maybe, hopefully just lurking in the shadows, share trips, or sites at least openly, that we (WA folks) now are a silent majority if that makes any sense. The sad thing is that the people who really got the places shutdown were the ones pointing the fingers at the wiki and the WA folks here on the wiki. I don't want to seem negative about it but we have seen this happen big time here. With this being said, I would still be interesting in helping.. Glen, wow it has been a long time. Great to see you. Hope you have been out rockin' and a cuttin'. Paul Do you find this valuable? |

I do not intend to put any super secret sites out there and a lot of my links will point back to the wiki. I think that rockhounding is a dying hobby and we have a responsibility to net new people interested. Not everyone three-toothed redneck tweeker is going to go out and destroy sites but that being said I do have an awareness around it for sure. I have been to some of these areas being shut down. I would love to lead group trips where etiquette and respect is taught. I am going to comb the internet for what is already available and put it all in one place. I love that the wiki already does these things but what it does not have is a marketed storefront or a super easy to use interface. It's a amazing resource filled with amazing people, I want to make rockhounding more accessible to teenagers with their noses stuck in their iphones. Do you find this valuable? |

I am very passionate about sharing my passion of rocks with others. I understand there are fears, but there are always fears when creating a revolution. As Americans our interest in science is dying, it is obvious by some of the posts here and we are happy to educate, LET'S FOSTER MORE EDUCATION! Much of what I will be putting on the site is already available on the internet, I just want to organize and explain it for the general public. Do you find this valuable? |

Especially getting the noses out of the ipods and off the computers and to get outside! :-) This is a very good thing. And educating the public to our hobby will only help the efforts. As for a dying hobby, I frankly think here lately there has been a resurgence in the hobby. Unfortunately the demise if hunting locals is not only bad practices by very few people that call themselves rockhounds but the environmentalists who would like to lock up all of the public lands so no one can use them for anything. The storefront will be great. The wiki has the classifieds but it is somewhat hard to find without some effort. I think the website is a good idea for sure and will be willing to do what I can to participate. I love your passion for this! :-) Paul 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

I will update this thread as I make progress for feedback and stuff. :) I feel that rockhounding is dying out, I don't see a lot of young adults doing it or enthused about it. I know there was a lot more interest in the 60s. What I see out there are a lot of people over 45 and eventually those people will get old and not be able to hound. Who fills their shoes? Also what beer way to raise earth awareness than teaching others how to appreciate her beauty in a sustainable manner. :) 1 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

i think it is a great idea too. there's already been talk within the jade community about having a communal site. there are a lot of Old timer jade hunters who would like to be able to sell some of thier collections off to make ends meet, but many don't have the IT savvy to pull it off...some have tried, but now thier sites are deadends, not maintained and pointless. i will mention your efforts to them.~Zeke Do you find this valuable? |

Needless to say I'm allwys interested in the treasures of the NW especially if I have an opportunity to add my two cents worth or make change for a newbie. It's sad to see the lands weve lost access too to pursue our rockhounding or any number of other recreational pursuits we mey engage in and quite simple stated we are all guilty of being asleep at the wheel as wise stewards of our lands. Politics has impacted and impeded our hobby coupled with brainless policy's that restrict and limit our enjoyment of our public lands. Educate,Educate. As Far as NW rocks and minerals go. I have Agates -C.R. Agates. Aman Do you find this valuable? |

Although I live outside of your area in Colorado I think it is a great idea. Wish I could get to some of the places out there. I have been to the Juniper ridge opal mine, best place I have ever been. All clubs ad rockhounds need to be aware of people who are ruing good sites all over the country. Keep up the good work. Gemman

I wish she lived closer we would make a agate hunter out of her and she would never look back. Go girl and if us out here in the sticks can help ya any, let us know. Howdy do gentlemen! Make an agate hunter out of me? MAKE an agate hunter out of me? WELL..... if I am ever in that miserable stretch of land you call home DB we will SEE who is an agate hunter. ;) LOL... If/when I am through your neck of the woods, it's on! I might just be able to conjure up a page on that website for alien rocks like yours. Whatcha got? :) UPDATE: I have created the blog and picked a shopping site to host the store. I am working on creating a logo and researching some of the search engine optimization backend structure. Anyone here good with graphics who would want to help with a logo? xoxo boys! WELL..... if I am ever in that miserable stretch of land you call home Miserable ? Girl, that's gods country. Rockhound paradise. You can collect more beautiful material in a square block of that " miserable " stretch of land in a day, than you can find in a section of land in Oregoooon in a week. And then there's Fairburn agates. Nowhere else in the world has anything that will compare to them. ---- Now it's your turn DB. LOL Don Do you find this valuable? |
