The Suak River (misspelled?) northeast of Cle Ellum. This is right off of Highway 97 heading towards Bluitt Pass. I drove through Liberty (old gold town) in May and saw a sign that someone was offering family friendly goldpanning. If I remember correctly part of that river is also set aside for public access for gold panning.Check it out. Good place to start would be the ranger station in Cle Ellum. No!!!!! You read that sign wrong. It says GOLD PANNING HERE AND DIRT FOR SALE... Bob sells what we call HOT DIRT" right from the mine he is working and he salts it a bit so no one goes home empty handed. He had a tank you can pan your dirt in right there. Prices are good and he is full of information. He will teach you how to pan. But there is no where along rte. 97 thats legal to pan. Most of the waters in the Blewett mining district are claimed up and whats along the highway is all private property. I have three claims just a little bit further down from Bob's place, so be carefull where you go . Fines are no joke up in that neck of the woods.

Ahh, which is why I stated that the ranger stations would be a good place to start. However, I have always been told that there is a section of the river there that is open to the public, and in years past have seen other folks offering to teach people how to pan for gold right there. I'm no authority on collecting gold in that area as my search takes me much further north, but I would be interested in knowing the truth about the area and will make some inquiries and post whatever I find.

The ranger station would usually be a good place to inquire if you are lucky to catch it open. I wish it were as simple as just going down along the creek and panning, but trust me, this area we are talking about is highly inforced. The ranger station may or may not know where to tell you to go. They dont handle prospecting issues. Try the fish and wildlife office in Levenworth. They have jurisdiction over this area and county. My claims are further down 97 in chellan county. About 18 miles from that panning sign.

Actually, the BLM Office in Spokane can give exact information on claims anywhere in the state including this area.
