Look at the carnelian post. I found two large pieces of opal in SW Washington within the last 6 weeks. WSMC is leading a field trip to the Wenatchee area for garnets in August. I also have garnets in Snoqualmie Pass. As for diamonds, from what I've heard there have been 7 or 8 facetable diamonds found in the state of Washington in recorded history. (probably left from retreating glaciers?) Recenlty a person posted on facebook that they thought they found a 7 or 8 carat diamond by Darington. No other word about that though. WSMC = mineralcouncil.org

I heard rumor this last winter that a large diamond was found near Darington. (Not Squire Creek though) Not sure if it ever turned out to be a diamond or not. After talking to some older Washington State rockhounds I have heard that 7 or 8 facetable diamonds have been found in the state historically. Probably left by retreating glaciers though.

If you're in an area where a diamond or two have been found, try panning for them, just like you would gold. Most gem stones have a high SG, and will sink just like gold does.

As I recall (I could be wrong) Diamondprospector, a member here, noted some minor Kimberlite dikes in WA. But they only produced very small diamonds if any. The few diamonds found within the state I think are leftovers from regions far north of us carried down from glaciers as Wondersofnature stated. Not to say there isn't a pocket of gems grade diamonds around the state, maybe they are just waiting for the right person to find them. Search for threads that diamondprospector had posted and I think you will be amazed what is out there. He also has a monthly newsletter and a website if I remember right. One and only diamond I've ever found was while panning in Icicle Creek, near Levanworth. Was part of a UW geology field trip, learning to identify minerals with heavy liquids. Had to show it to the TA twice to have him believe me. Bob Do you find this valuable? |
