We have gone to Jerry Call's many times over the last 10 years or so and have become friends with the whole gang. Jerry is the gem cutter that cut the Aquamarine for Becky in season one. These are the nicest people you could ever meet and you will learn a lot about gemstones and how to identify them. If you cut stones, either facet or cabs, you will find the best material in Jerry's buckets. We have many stones that they have cut for us over the years and they will remain in our private collection or be set in jewelry for family members. If you stop by tell them Ann and John Dwiggins said hello. 5  out of 7 found this valuable. Do you?

No, have never been in person, though I watch the shows and drool at some of the treasures that are found. I have however, purchased buckets of ore from Gem Mountain and has a blast sorting our the gems. I just send the gems back, the Gem Mountain staff ID's the gems and help determined which may of facet quality. I have had several gems faceted through them and am quite pleased. One thing this show has done has cost me many $'s. As I have now started faceting myself hence have purchased a machine and related equipment! I am not very good at it yet, but is it is a blast to facet a gem that you found yourself, even though it is from a purchased bucket instead of being there in person. I guess I could mention the minisluice I built with a self contained recirculation system I use to run concentrates I can find on the net. It too is a blast. I wish I could say I visited one of the featured places, but I just can't travel well and none thus far are close to home. However, we are in the planning stages of heading to MT and visiting the sapphire mines featured on C and T this next summer. If I had several months and plenty of $'s I would plan a tour of the western states to look for sapphires, fossils, opals, sunstones plus anything else I could find. It would be a kick, but for me it is at best an every other day adventure. Would have to recover a for a day for heading back out or traveling. I am sure by the end of the second season, I will be able to add several more stops on my western state dream tour. Can hardly wait for the shows to start. 3  out of 4 found this valuable. herkimer diamonds
Dec 4 2007, 10:05 PM EST
My husband and I stumbled upon herkimer diamond mines this past summer and spent a pleasant dirty afternoon digging up the diamonds. He used the sledgehammer and I sifted through the dirt and mud. It was quite fun and we found quite a few cool samples. I'm amazed that these diamonds are worth so much... so my question is, you estimated her find to be a few hundred dollars.. who buys these crystals? and where can I go in NY state to sell them and/or to get the ones we found appraised? thanks for answering and/or emailing me. pkrose 2  out of 3 found this valuable. To answer some of your questions, who buys them, mineral collectors. In new york state you might try a local gem show or ebay. If you send me some pics of them i'll try to give you an estimate on what their worth. I hope this helps! see ya 2  out of 5 found this valuable. Do you?

In july 2007 my family and I went to North Carolina for vacation. We met Jerry Call and his family. They are very nice people. They explained how the process worked and what to look for. They were very helpful!! We purchased several buckets and were very lucky!! I found a crystal quartz when faceted was 38.66cts, a smoky quartz when faceted was 28.52cts, several green tourmalines, rose quartz,a blue topaz, several aquamarines, citrines ,amethysts, moonstones and a few emeralds. Jerry faceted my stones and sent them to my home in two month's. They had a waiting list which was about eight weeks behind. We went back another day to purchase more bucket's and try our luck again and they remembered us. I was very suprised!! All the tourist that go there ,they remembered US!! Most places make you feel like your a number, but not them!! They make you feel special! We are going back again in 2008!! If your in North Carolina, look them up! You'll be glad you did!! 8  out of 9 found this valuable. Do you?

I mentioned we went to North Carolina in July 2007 on vacation and went to Reo Doce. I also wanted to tell you we went to Gem Mountain a few days later. We went to a mine they have, the same one Becky went to . It cost $55.00 per person for 3 hours. I didn't think it was that great. I did find alot of gemstones. Rubies, garnets, aquamarines, amathyst, tourmalines, topaz, smoky quartz and emerald's.I'm not complaining about the gemstones, they were very nice. I didn't like the amount of people that go at the same time. I think that they should'nt have that many at one time. You feel like you have to run to find anything.I felt like I was being rushed. I'm sure they have to bring that many people to make everyone happy. I did find alot of gemstone's like I said ,but I took my time after everyone settled down . That's when I found most of my gemstones. I rather go to Gem Mountain sit down take my time and sift through their bucket's. We did have a good time there too. We went back a few times before our vacation was over. I hope that anyone reading this doesn't think that Gem Mountain isn't a great place to go searching for gemstones because it is. I just didn't like the Gem Mine. Also, you can order bucket's online: www.gemmountain.com. 4  out of 5 found this valuable. Do you?

I have just started watching the show today... thanks to my husband... We were VERY interested in several of the places that were shown in the marathon... the herkimer diamonds in NY, emeralds in NC... but what REALLY captured our attention was the turmoline...

I have tried to do a search for Himalaya Mines but everything I have brought up says that it is privately owned and not open to the public. If I remember clearly, Kirsten said that there was a small fee to do the digging (what she was doing when she found her $12,000 piece), not the mine where she went underground, but the place where she was digging with Simon... THIS is something my husband and I would enjoy doing... it would be relaxing as well...

Does anyone have any idea on how one can go to that place, where it is actually located, name of location etc...? How much the daily fee is? Where I could even look online... I am a bit green when it comes to the internet. We live in AZ so its not that long of a distance for us to travel.

Of course, we will also be interested in checking out the other places in NY and NC...

My husband has some gems he purchased when he was in Brazil, so we think we may want to get them priced... we might be sitting on our own gold-mine... LOL

Thanks for any help.

Here is a website for the Himalaya Mine (I believe these are the same owners of the Spectrum Sunstone Mine in OR.) http://highdesertgemsandminerals.com/html/himalaya_mine.html and here is one for digging at the mine. http://highdesertgemsandminerals.com/html/himalaya_mine_digs.html According to the websites they are still open for digging. I guess the websites may not be updated and the closure is something new. Maybe email them and see what the current status of the mine. Hope this helps. 5  out of 6 found this valuable. Do you?

I've been to the Crater of Diamonds in Arkansas outside of Murfreesboro and had a great time. The town is nice and the people are friendly, it is also a great place for antique hunting. Although I did not have much sucess I plan to return. The fees are small, about $5 or $6 and it is in a park with camping accomidations. The experience was one worth repeating. 1  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

I caught a portion of a program about a place on the FL east coast (Turtle Bay?) where shipwreck treasure washes up to be found with metel detectors on the beach, I believe it is part of a National Park. Anybody with further details please chime in. 1  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

Etherealhaven, hope it helps and I most definately hope you can plan a trip there to hunt gems. We are working on a trip to MT for sapphires and So. OR for Sunstones and opals this summer. That is of all works out. Won't have time to make it that far south to hunt tourmaline. But some day...

Hey nilyta, I think C & T also did a segment in FL where Becky searched for fossil shark teeth in a river. I just don't remember where and when.

Went to Hiddenite Mine in NC in summer of 2005 for a day, as a rookie without any idea of what to expect. found many rocks, but again, as a rookie wasn't sure what we had and had to leave when a storm hit. Went back again in 2006, prepared to dig and find TONS of gems. Digging dirt in 98 degrees is not easy so we ended up "creekin". Found alot of gems in just a couple hours by just digging in the creek and sifting the sediment. Found amethyst, rubies, garnets, tourmaline, aquamarine, and many facetable pieces of emeralds in the rough. Had some of the best faceted or cabbed at a place outside Boone, NC where we were staying. Ended up with 3.78 ct. green Tourmaline that's flawless and several pairs of ruby earings for the the grandchildren, emerald earings and pendant for my wife over a ct. each. Have some others that are cut but waiting for the right inspiration to decide how to have them set, and a lot more rocks, gem quality, that still need to be cut and faceted. It was a great time and was dissapointed that we didn't make it back there this past summer. Trying to plan a trip to the area for next summer.

Not trying to give anything a plug here, but I've found some of the places I want to go to in Rock & Gem Magazine. They usually have several articles each month about what you can find where, and how to go about it, supplies and how to contact local rockhound clubs to get some local info before you go. Might even be able to find info on their website, rockngem.com. Might be worth a try. 10  out of 11 found this valuable. Do you?
