wezzerspop, sounds like a great trip and time. Finding your own gems then getting them faceted is a real kick. I haven't been able to go in person but have purchased buckets of material from different places in NC. Have found some real nice gems and have had some faceted as well. I am a newbie hobbist faceter and it is a real kick to cut my own stones from the gems I have found. To bad NC is 3000 miles away, but then again it may be good that it is as I would probably spend too much money hunting gems. lol

Also thanks for the info. I would lik eto be able to find some hunting spots closer to home. Rock and Gem would be a great source.

In 1997 my family and I took a trip out to the Maritimes in Canada... In Nova Scotia we went to a beach where we picked up tons of rocks, amethysts, crystals, etc. On this beach there are some cliffs and what the locals say is that you can even find rubies on the beach. Each year when the winter comes, the ice forms on top of the ocean and this pushes up against the cliffs which, when the thaw occurs, parts of the cliff crumble off and when the tide goes out, you can find all sorts of treasures...

I even found a fossil of a child's foot. I've not yet had it appraised but I know that the Museum of Civilization in Hull, QC was very interested in taking a look at it.

Let me find the name of the beach... town and let you know. It's really beautiful in that part of the world, and you don't have to pay anything to walk along the beach and try your hand at some treasure hunting.

Here is the name of the place: Minas Basin, Parrsboro. You might also be interested in checking out this site: http://www.bayoffundy.com/geologicalgems.aspx and http://www.town.parrsboro.ns.ca/hightides.html (to learn more about the place and the high tides and how they form).

We walked along the beach for hours, and filled the back of our mini-van with rocks, crystals, and semi-precious stones.

We also went to/thru Gloosecap... it is a lovely and interesting part of the world and well worth the trip.

Hi there,

I tried calling the Himalaya Mine today with no success. Yesterday my email got bounced. Apparently the dispute between the mine owners and the neighboring land owners over the right-of-way hasn't been resolved yet. Hopefully it will be soon and we can enjoy a trip there!

It sure would be helpful if someone could post an update on this issue.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, I certainly hope they can get the right-of-way issue resolved in short order. The wife is hinting about wanting to head to Southern CA.... Warmth and gems sounds like a good plan to me. lol The problem is going to be getting there. It is never easy for me. argh!!

We went to Gem Mountian and Hiddenite, NC in Sept. and had a good time. We brought back a few large gems and I was wondering where you sell the raw gems? Most of the places that I checked with told me there isn't anywhere in Michigan that buys the gems. Do you find this valuable?

"Etherealhaven, hope it helps and I most definately hope you can plan a trip there to hunt gems. We are working on a trip to MT for sapphires and So. OR for Sunstones and opals this summer. That is of all works out. Won't have time to make it that far south to hunt tourmaline. But some day...

Hey nilyta, I think C & T also did a segment in FL where Becky searched for fossil shark teeth in a river. I just don't remember where and when."
Hi pviih - FYI my family and I went to Spokane bar sapphire mine last July(103 degs) and we were a little dissapointed. We spent 2 days there and finally pulled up and went to the Gem Mountain mine at Philipsburg MT. It is a quaint little town and nice to wander thru - try the candy shop and the soda fountain - great but back to sapphires go south of town approx 6 - 7 miles to Shalkaho Rd. and turn to your rt. - follow to end of pavement and you are at Gem Mountain mine. We spent 1/3 of the money and got 5 times the stones. They can take your stones and heat treat them and get them facetted for you. We are going for Sunstones and Opal this year.

I have gone to Arkansas to dig beautiful Quartz crystals and to New York to dig Herkimer diamonds. I would however like to see Kirsten go to Keokuk Iowa to find Keokuk geodes. Or another great place might be for her to visit might be "Rio Grande do Sul" in Brazil to find Amethyst Cathedral geodes 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

Over our Road Trip across the Western part of the US.. We stopped by Demings, NM... Place to find Geodes (Dinosuars eggs).. Kid loved searching for them... Collect a few rocks, but haven't had the time to crack them open to see if there's anything in there... This summer we're planning on going to MT, maybe we'll stop by some of the places that were feature... The kids enjoy it.. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Some friends from the Culver City Rock & Mineral Club went to the Himalaya Dig at the Lake Henshaw Resort the second day it was open. They were happy with the set up and the pieces of tourmaline that they found in the tailings.

I was at the actual Himalaya Mine the last day, 9/8/07, it was open before the dispute over the road. Digging on the hillside is a lot of fun and you get to chose pretty much anywhere on the whole place to dig (except right in the middle of the road - which is actually also made of tailings from the mine). I'm planning to get down to try the new set up some time soon, but sure hope that the mine owner, Chris Rose, gets his legal rights to full access back and has the trips back to the actual mine soon. The location is beautiful and the Himalaya Mine is steeped with history.

i was just looking over the discussion for last month (me - a new member) and our family went Venice, Florida to dive for shark teeth....on their only dive, my son found a shark tooth the size of his palm and the geologist on site told us it was millions of years old, probably worth about $350. That and other teeth were found by my husband and son.....I found a few teeth on the beach...about nickel size and much smaller.....so we all came away from that trip very happy.....we plan to go back.soon..you can call the Florida tourism and they will send you a booklet on where to go and things to do with a section on sharp teeth hunting...I'm sure if you ask them, they will also give you directions on where that river is located.....good luck Do you find this valuable?
