"not yet but come spring we are going to give it a try,I have an old friend in AZ. he says he knows a spot to look for FIRE AGETS"
That sounds great. I inherited my grandfathers rock collection oh so many years ago (the sife always gets mad at me when everytime we move - not to many times fortuniately, I keep moving these boxes of rocks around with me.- she just doesn't understand lol) and he had a lot of fire agate. Beautiful stuff for sure. But he use to go to AZ every year - winter time and rock hound. I know he got a lot of the agate there in AZ. Man if your friend has a spot, go for it. Sounds like a real kick!

"i was just looking over the discussion for last month (me - a new member) and our family went Venice, Florida to dive for shark teeth....on their only dive, my son found a shark tooth the size of his palm and the geologist on site told us it was millions of years old, probably worth about $350. That and other teeth were found by my husband and son.....I found a few teeth on the beach...about nickel size and much smaller.....so we all came away from that trip very happy.....we plan to go back.soon..you can call the Florida tourism and they will send you a booklet on where to go and things to do with a section on sharp teeth hunting...I'm sure if you ask them, they will also give you directions on where that river is located.....good luck "
WOW - how absolutely exciting!!! Adding that to my list of things to do - thank you for sharing!!!!

I finally made it down from Los Angeles to the Himalaya Mine this last Sunday. The dig is set up at the Lake Henshaw Resort, not at the actual Himalaya Mine. You get the gate code from the Lake Henshaw Resort store and go to the lower camp ground. It is a dirt road, a little bumpy, but any car can drive it..

The way they have it set up is very nice. In a flat section, there is the large pile of mine tailings - which our group of over 30 people almost got down to the ground (but not quite). All around the pile of dirt, they have screening tables - each with three stations with rinsing trays. They supply the 1/4-inch screens, buckets, shovels and water. There were quite a few families with preteen children who did a great job of finding tourmaline.

They open at 9 AM and you can dig until 3 PM, although only me and one other couple were still going strong at about 3:10 when they started washing off the screens to clean up for the next day. Due to the rain we've had in southern California, the tailing mud, which I was told comes off of the hillside from the upper level near the sheds by the Himalaya Mine entrance, was very wet and heavy. Carrying bucket loads, shaking out the extra dirt in the screen and the rinsing was work. But it was sure fun. Every 10 or 15 minutes, someone would call out that they had found something nice and then walk aroung the circle and show us all. All day long, people were taking their finds over to Simon King to identify them. I saw some eye-clear, pencil-sized green tourmaline about an inch long, quite a few thicker but shorter bi-colored tourmalines but then, since I hadn't found anything big yet, I quit looking up and got to some serious screening.

On the whole, everybody seemed happy with what they found during the day. More than half of the people said they were definitely coming back. Since I never found my "big one" this trip, I also plan to go back - tourmaline fever is an addiction.

"I mentioned we went to North Carolina in July 2007 on vacation and went to Reo Doce. I also wanted to tell you we went to Gem Mountain a few days later. We went to a mine they have, the same one Becky went to . It cost $55.00 per person for 3 hours. I didn't think it was that great. I did find alot of gemstones. Rubies, garnets, aquamarines, amathyst, tourmalines, topaz, smoky quartz and emerald's.I'm not complaining about the gemstones, they were very nice. I didn't like the amount of people that go at the same time. I think that they should'nt have that many at one time. You feel like you have to run to find anything.I felt like I was being rushed. I'm sure they have to bring that many people to make everyone happy. I did find alot of gemstone's like I said ,but I took my time after everyone settled down . That's when I found most of my gemstones. I rather go to Gem Mountain sit down take my time and sift through their bucket's. We did have a good time there too. We went back a few times before our vacation was over. I hope that anyone reading this doesn't think that Gem Mountain isn't a great place to go searching for gemstones because it is. I just didn't like the Gem Mine. Also, you can order bucket's online: www.gemmountain.com."
treasureseaker1; My wife and i took a long weekend and spent two days at Spruce Pine ,Nc. Got there late on Fri. and had a trip to the mine booked for Sat. morning after seeing the show Becky did. I must agree with most of the good things you said about the people at Gem Mountain, but the mine is something else. The only thing i found at the mine that wasn't put there for the "tourist" was (berile?) i did find a lot of other gems , garnite, ruby , emeral, tourmaline, quartz, and aquamarine. None looked like they came from that particular formation to me, and i also found two of my aquamarine stones had ben cut not" blown "from the formation. Also i was impressed by the amount of low grade gems they get from a hole in the ground that is dynamited one, two times a week and when i went a year after Becky , my pictures show the hole almost identical to the picture from the show.I know this sounds negitive, but i also know its a business. Don't get me wrong i will be there some-time next year. Because i really did have fun. I will go there after Herkimer, NY(its closer) As for the show I love it. It gives you an idea of places to go but you have
to remember you are not going to go to the closed areas or be given a tour where the real gems are found in most of these places. So long as you remember this, it can be a very fun vacation, because when you are up to your elbows in mud and fun the grind at the office fades a bit. Sorry for being so windy.

I have been to Emerald Hollow Mine in NC. It was a fun time although crowded. I had fair luck with the buckets in the sluice finding a few speciman grade stones. I know some of the material was salted. I also did some digging and came up withy a piece of topaz. 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

Hey man, I don't type the links. I would never be able to type something that long without messing up then you would have a broken link. Man I hate broken links. lol Good old copy and paste is the way to go.

Hi Treasurefever. thanks for the compliment on the cut gems. They are far from perfect if looked at up close as I am just a newbie when comes to faceting. But even if they aren't perfect, when they shine and sparkle in your eyes it is every rewarding.

I too like hunting for gems. It is a kick. Unfortunately, NC is way to far away for me to go in person. Hence we buy buckets of ore to sort at home. We have gotten some nice facetable and specimen material and have never been disappointed. It is fun! It is funny to see that there is always one gung-ho person in the family that really likes to dig and hunt for stuff and the other well lets say puts with it. lol

I hope you can find a place to cut your gems for you. The Sri Lanka company is just one of many. I am waiting to hear from my gem guru for some other off shore faceting companies so I can research them and decide where I will send some of my roughs. When I get the list I will post them. Have fun on all of your treasure hunts! Paul

I am so glad you are going to post them. I seen your guru's email address so I took a picture of some gems that I'm hoping he has time to tell me what they are. I've got 1 the size of the palm of my hand that I thought they told us was aquamarine and then I seen a picture of it in the rough on his web site and it looks nothing like a clear tube and the other is brown and it looks like it's got some kind of black and white markings on it. Who knows,I might have some money and just don't know it. I'm praying right now. I'm going to put the picture on my profile as soon as I can get it fixed.ha

Greetings Treasurefever.
Have fun on this site, Exploration and discovery are part of any good hunt. May I suggest you begin by going to the Photo Gallery and begin your album of Treasure photo's there. Seems to me to be a little more user friendly when it comes to posting pic's than the other pages or profile. Don't ever, never, never ever give up.....you'll get it.
I'm learnin along with you and the rest of these Treasure Chasers :) the in's and out's, good and bad of this unique and wonderful site. I am lookling forward to viewing your picture and stories as well as everyone else..........Happy Trails >>> Andy
