the first may be an agate of some sort or chert hard to tell. The second I don't know. I have limited knowledge of stones. It would help if you cold get a couple of sharper pic's but they are nice.
good hunting

hi treasurefever, get pics! That is a huge nice pice of Aquamarine. Does there look like there is any clear areas in the stone? Those areas could be faceted. The brown stones looks like a banned agate of some sort. Thanks for sharing! Paul

Was thinking it was banded agate also but wasn't sure. I cut through it would tell for sure but would be hesitant since it ain't me stone. But the chevron pattern on the facing side continues into the stone it would make some nice cab's for sure.

I don't see anything clear on the Aquamarine because of the rough exterior. I thought about getting my drimel out just to see if I could buff some of the gems to tell what color they are, especially the sapphires. I have discovered some beautiful about the brown stone. I put it on top of my flashlight and all of the black that is on it was glowing a clear rich orange color. Do you find this valuable?

If it light's up orange to yellow it is probably a chalsedony then (agate) nice stone. Do you find this valuable?

You are doing the right things with the light. You can rub the stones with a little mineral oil and that may help get rid of some of the outside stuff - us the flashlight or strong light again. Since you are new to the gem thing (I can certainly understand your excitement! Lol), you probably do not have a rock tumbler. Tumbling them with help remove the outside crust if you will on the sapphire or rubies you may have. Remember a sapphire and ruby is exactly the same thing except for color. If the stone is red it is a ruby, any other color it is a sapphire. You may be able to use some wet/dry sand paper to sand some of the outside stuff off too. I know that some people actually sand and can polish stones that way.

I remember during the star garnet show that Kirsten was doing a bit of cleaning of her stones using a margarine container and water. I don't know if there was grit in there as well. She just shook them - but it must have been all day. lol I don't remember if they showed the stones after she was done shaking them. I think it was the garnet's queen’s way to get her out of her hair while she cut the stones. lol I am trying to remember where I saw the procedures for cleaning and polishing stones without the usual lapidary equipment. If I can find them I will let you know. Paul

my dad knew that process.
step one gather kid's
step two gather rock's
step three give each kid a rock
step four give each kid a wire brush
step five drink beer and yell at kid's to keep brushing

I bought a kiddie rock tumbler and put a few gems in it and it just about ate the dern things up.lol I didn't know sapphires and rubies were the same. ha We have rubies that are rough and ugly with a light red look and what we thought was sapphires are gray and smooth and reflects a metallic shine. I'll put the dremel tool on one of those.lol Me and my friend Terresa thought the rubies we have look like the baked candy peanuts. LOL I have just read up on Amber and I didn't know it had healing properties and has been proven also. I have a big chunk of it . Me and my husband will probably be fighting over it too. ha Yall have a good night and thanks Do you find this valuable?

Hey a hint about using the tumbler for cleaning but not polishing is don't add any grit. Then just use one type of stone at the same time. Such as rubies and sapphires can go in at the same time. But don't add sapphires with aquamarine. I guess only tumble stones of equal hardness. Just add the water and let run for a day then check them. All you are really trying to do is to take that rusty scaly stuff off the out side of the stone. It may take several days but it is with the time. Once you get that outside stuff off you may then use the light to check for color and clarity. Some may not be clear but then again they may be a star sapphire. Sounds like you have some good colored rubies. Hope they are clear. If you are going to send any stones out for faceting, I would recommend sending all of the stones so the facetor can look at the stones and determine the best one for faceting. Ask before sending them. One never knows you could have a real good one in there. Hope this helps. Paul 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

Thanks treasurefever, that is a bunch of emeralds. lol I like green. I see you have some nice emeralds in your picture too. You got some real nice gems there. Looks like a lot of sapphires and rubies and maybe a garnet or 2. The piece of citrine on the lower left of the picture has a nice color. Is there a clean area there in the orange area? It isn’t cracked or have fractures inside? I do have a couple of more questions. What is the pink sort of pointed stone next to the aquamarine and the black stone in the back right? You have any idea?

Looks like you had a good time in your hunt for treasures.

Thanks,We did have a good time. First vacation I had in 14 years. Yes it was fun! The citrine looks clear to me with no fractures.I was told the pink gem is pink sparkled quartz. It looked better before the tumbler and the dark stone in the back is smokey quartz. The dark stone on the right corner behind the 3 small gems is the smooth dark gray metallic gem I was telling yall about. I can't wait to go back. We bought 3 buckets and I have several jars of different gems especially Amethyst. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Hey be sure you check that amethyst, some of that could be facet grade and cuts some nice stones. 14 years! egads, that is way to long to wait for a vacation. lol Gem hunting is a kick and an addiction! But there are a lot of other things that are addicting and are a lot worse for you. lol

Was the metallic gem tumbled?

LOL We have all of these gems and we have know idea what we have. ha I have a quart jar full of the light purple and 3 big ones that want fit in a jar that have some some white and dark purple. The fool's gold is so pretty. I want to go to Desoto Caverns in Childersburg,Alabama to pan for gold. I haven't been there in 30 years and it don't take me but 30 min. to get there. Has anybody been there? I bought me a gold panning kit from ebay and took it to the creek below my house and by the time I sifted through 1 pan my back was killing me.lol The next time I go I'm taking this short stool and sitting it right now in the creek so I can at least check a bucket full.lol It's bad getting old.lol 1  out of 1 found this valuable.
