I thought I would start a thread on the geology of the Pacific Northwest. It is a fascinating region with a variety of rock structures from igneous, metamorphic. to sedimentary. It was ether this or what is your favorite beer.

A few things i've done today to clean things up..
All links remain the same. Nothing should be broken, if it has become let me know and i'll fix it.. 1. Moved "Mining Laws & Terms" page to the "Educational Guides" folder & added it to the index page with a link. 2. Moved Classified Ad's page to the Top level and ordered it towards the top of the site to make it more visible. How did I never see this before? 3. Moved new beautiful Opal's page to the Opal's folder under "Hunting for Treasure > Gems and Minerals > Opal". Link's should remain the same. 4. Alphabatized the entire "Your Treasure Hunter Profile" folder. This alot of the MEAT of our site. There is about a hundred pages here with TONS of information. At least now it's in the right order to find a page. As you can imagine, the slow manual bubble sort method was the only way to do this.. Oh how i wish for direct database access.... 5. Moved Skeeters work page into the Your Treasure Hunter Profile folder and put it in order so its easy to find. This will be an ongoing effort i'll try to do once a month or so... If you have any problems, questions, concerns, or ideas about what we can do to make this great site easier to navigate please don't hold back. I am very open to people helping out :-) -Jake

Was a beautiful day uptop Sadlle Mtn today as we arrived around 11:30 am.Slight breze, not to hot just right but still managed to work up a sweat trying to keep up with the two youngNs (8& 16).There mother has just recently joined the local club and is quite enthusiastic when it comes to hunting for rocks,Anyrocks.Very light pressure as I only saw two others digging.Sure is pretty up there. We called it quits at 2pm with 3 buckets of nice, fist size tumbling material.Took them back to that hole where Jeff ,Paul and I dug a month ago.We enlarged that hole somewhat and took out 1/2 dozen nice size pieces.

HERE IS THE THREAD JAKESROCKS HAS STARTED:
Yesterday, 12:45 PM EDT | Post edited: Yesterday, 12:45 PM EDT So much useful stuff gets thrown away, that I decided to start this thread. I hope others will join in with their ideas. When you go to the pizza places to buy pizza to bring home, They often come with a plastic triangle in the middle with 3 legs attached. These make excellent stands for geodes, spheres and mineral specimens. The legs can be easily cut to the length needed to properly display your specimen, so don't throw them in the trash. Yesterday, 4:41 PM EDT | Post edited: Yesterday, 4:41 PM EDT Another common household item that can be put to use are those wire drapery hooks. With a little bit of bending, they can be turned into slab display stands at about 1/3 the cost of the plastic slab stands. Just be sure to cut or grind the sharp pointed end off, so you don't stab yourself. Any other ideas for useful common items ? Don

OK, we're hooked! But we want to approach this slowly and logically. First going out on weekends then on a week or two vacation, and then to be a rockhound into retirement. We're in Seattle and if anyone knows of anything in this state or more importantly, where to start, we would be most appreciative.
Doug.

I thought a thread about places to collect not in the guide books would be an interesting discussion. Most of my collecting sites are not on the tourist maps and are a lot less crowded and not as picked over. After prospecting for a while a person learns some tricks of the trade (so to speak). The first tip is to learn a little about your local geology. I not saying become a geologist but it makes a lot of sense to know if the rocks in your area a sedimentary, igneous or metamorphic. Fossils will not be found in lava,
Road cuts give a great lesson in what kind of rock is at that location. In fact road cuts can be get collecting sites but do not park on the shoulder or on an Interstate. Some states have regulations about collecting a road cut but most will allow collecting if you are not excavating. The most valuable site I ever find in Tennessee was a fresh road cut. Cuts are often temporary. The one in Tennessee was temporary because the road cut was resodded . But a large number of Sulerian fossils came from that site some are in a museum. I called the University of Alabama when I found the site because it was to important to keep all to myself. I donated a free standing crinoid attached to a brocapod to the University Museum. Add more tips and I will too. Bill

I had a bout of insomnia last night, so to pass the time I went through two thirds of the pictures and picked out the ones that caught my attention, trying to feature a good cross section of interests. Mostly highlighting the funny, unusual and well composed and avoiding just rocks and those with out a description for the most part. Unfortunately (?), defying my expectations, they are ordered by date featured, not date posted. I like that though...I'll finish it in a couple of days. I think I'm featuring less than 1%. If you click on one, to the right you can page through the galleries at the spot that photo is located to see the other photos posted associated with the featured one. I believe the last photo that is featured appears at the top of the regular photo gallery. Hope you enjoy the trip down memory lane!

There are tool discussions going on in several threads, maybe would be a good stand-alone thread? Thought of posting a page, but would need photos for that, and I'm boycotting adding photos until Wetpaint gives us a delete option. Meanwhile, anyone have a favorite brand for collecting/cleaning tools? No offense lapidarists, but would prefer those tools be on another thread ... which I'm not qualified to post to.
Chisels: for general rock moving work (opening/enlarging cracks), buy a stout cold chisel, minimum 3/4 inch diameter, length does not matter, shorter is generally better. The tip should be no wider than the shank. Cold chisels are expensive, a good brand is worth the money. Buy north American made steel. Imports are generally worthless. Brands I like: Mayhew, Craftsman, Kelly. Brands to avoid: Dasco. Air hammer chisels (often available used, and very cheaply, at industrial tool rental places, work well. In Seattle, the going rate for used air chisels is $3.00/lb) Chisels, for crystal pocket collecting: longer is better, minimum 1/2 inch diameter. Tip no wider than shank. The plastic hand guards which come on many long chisels are great for kids or inexperienced rock whackers, but once you've done this awhile, you'll develop the art of Zen hammering, and the guards get in the way in crystal pockets. Wood chisels are great for working along a 'spall' (fracture line behind crystal plates). Buy the cheapest ones you can, imports ok, as they'll be destroyed in the process. Antique wood chisels last a long time. A range of edge sizes, from 1/4 to 1 inch will serve you well. Discount tool places like Harbor Freight have sets of 4 or 5 sizes for cheap. Chisels, for fossil collecting: Mason's chisels are good (tip 2 to 3 times as wide as shank). Wood chisels r good, keep sharp. My favorite shale splitting tool is a heavy chef's knife, w/ riveted tang, buy at Goodwill. Bob

Wondering if anyone has some great ideas about what kind of equipment we can get, that will be "budget friendly"? We have looked at smaller tile saws for small cutting, and also grinder/polishers at Harbor Freight. Can anyone tell me if these will work? I know for the big stuff I'd not be able to, but after something has been sliced up for me, would a tile saw work for jaspers (the hard stuff) and such?
